#Best Aspect Ratio?

Gary, What is the best resolution to use when creating a flc if I'm planning to output the flc onto video tape? I've been using 640×480 but I have to be very careful to keep within the safe frame. Wouldn't it be more efficient to simply render to the NTSC aspect ratio? I think I'm missing something here. Thanks, Alec Jason

Alec, the safe frame basically represents the area underneath a normal television monitor's bezel (the frame around the monitor). If you render inside of it, you're pretty much guaranteed that the bezel won't clip any of your important stuff. It's a completely separate issue from the resolution you render in, since every TV has a bezel, no matter what res it's displaying. If you're rendering flics to tape via real-time method (out of RAM or off the hard disk), the best res is probably 640×480, via something % MONNCI Network connection interrupted, possible data loss. Gary, Thanks. I guess I've been doing it the more or less correct way. All my flcs are played to NTSC via a Magni. I don't do any single-frame stuff. Alec Jason

Alec: If you're going frame-at-a-time with the Flitape utility, I'd recommend going with the highest on the card you are running with – 512×486 Targa or 756×486 for the Vista. If you're going to do 'live' recording, probably 640×480, but be careful of tearing if you're moving many pixels around! Greg Pyros

Greg, I don't use a Targa of any kind, just a Magni. ALL my output is played "live" and ever since I upgraded to a local bus motherboard, I've had NO tearing when playing back flc's. Thanks, Alec Jason

Alec, PMJI but may I ask what graphics card are you using on your local bus motherboard? I recently bought a VLB board but am still using my "old" Orchid Pro Designer II because I can't make up my mind what with all the conflicting and confusing information out there. What I basically want is to be able to play back .flc's without tearing. Thanks Greg LeVasseur

640×480 if playing the FLC live through the Targa, as the Targa works _faster_ in resolutions ABOVE 512×486. Dave
