#A-1200 Hard Disk

I have been trying to get an answer from both Commodore and my local dealer as
to how to install an IDE drive in an A-1200 and allow the A-1200 to recognize
that its there. When I talked to Commodore about 2.5 months ago they informaed
me that they would be shipping a hard disk installation kit. So I asked my
dealer to order one for me. About two weeks ago my dealer sent me a real short
IDE cable which I used to hook up my seagate drive. When I crank up the system
the drive comes on, but I have no way of telling the system that a hard drive
exists. I called back commodore and they said that I needed an INSTALL
diskette. I called my dealer back and he told me that I should have some
software with AmigaDOS 3. I called back Commodore and here I sit, a week and a
half later waiting for some sort of response. How did Commodore manage to sell
any Amiga's with this sort of assistance. Oh I did manage to talk to Commodore
again and they told me only my dealer could send me the disk. They will not
ship an INSTALL disk direct. Help Please! David P. Miller

Your dealer needs an education.
The Install disk doesn't ship with the Amiga 1200 that doesn't come
standard with a hard disk. It does come with the A1200HD and the A4000. If
you dealer had gotten you Commodore's actual hard drive kit, you'd have
gotten not only an IDE cable, but an Install Disk, the AmigaFonts disk
with Compugraphic fonts, the AmigaDOS manual, and the ARexx manual.
However, you're in luck. Here on CIS, in the Microbotics forum, you can
find RDPrep, a Microbotics program that will partition your hard drive and
make it read to be formatted. You can then copy your 3.0 stuff to the hard
disk. HOWEVER, you'll want the Commodore hard drive kit anyway so you'll
get the scalable Compugraphic fonts and the missing manuals. You can
either call your Dealer and tell him of its existence, or you can order it
from Commodore Express' 800 number.

I don't have the 800 number here, but you should be able to get it from
800 information (800-555-1212). If not, call Commodore at 215-430-9100 —
they should know. 🙂

Thanks Brian, but I have tried that number with absolutely no success
whatsoever. Those people do not return my calls. I am not sure how they are

Commodore has packaged the Hard Disk Installation kit and they are
available to dealers to sell to you. Your Commodore dealer should know
this by now. If not, have him contact me and I will give him the part
number he needs to order.
You do need an install disk, and the dealer can not just give you a copy
as you do not have an original. To do so would violate the law.

My local dealer refuses to sell the Hard Disk Installation kit unless you
buy your HD from him.
Do any of the mail order places have it?
I don't know if any mail order places have it. We currently are out of
stock on it, but you can probably get it via Commodore Express.
I might add that if you do add a hard disk to the system, you will void
your Commodore warranty. It must be done by an authorized Amiga dealer.
