Can anybody help with SFR speeds? I have a Nucleos psfc(old version) connected to a SONY VO-9850. using LW it takes 25 seconds per frame to record. I also have a BCD 2000 sfc connected to a JVC brs-810. This machine takes 8 seconds to record frames. I usually work with large animations so this adds up to alot of time in the studio Ussually I do the animation on my JVC and only the final copy will be done on the 9850. My question is what kind of speed are you guys getting when laying your frames to tape? And does anybody have any experience with a BCD and a VO-9850. Edward Hanst (toasting from SUNNY CURACAO)

Edward, Do you mean the time to make the whole cycle, edit to edit? If so, my Nucleus (old)/Pana AG7750 takes about 35 seconds with a 10 second pre-roll time. I used a BVU 850 (I think) at the local PBS station, and it took about 20 seconds to cycle with a 4 second pre-roll. Check the pre-roll times and see if they're set right. Remember that the deck must not only play this long, but must also rewind further to get there, too. You can trim them back a little, but if you start getting errors, you've gone too far. I usually do paperwork or other non-computer stuff (like sleep!) during this time, so I leave my settings long. This ensures that the deck ALWAYS has time to get up to speed, and I've NEVER had a bad frame due to not syncing in the 12K or so that I've done. … Nate, Emerald Video. Flyin' IFR on AP

I understand nut my JVC/bcd2000 configuration rewinds and stays treaded after each frame and during this time lw is loading the new frame from disk. That's why the BCD2000 goes so fast. My 9850 has a preroll of 8 seconds and it works fine no errors. I was comparing because I think I will get a cable to connect my BCD200 to my 9850. The problem with this is that it is not available locally and my dealer in Miami is asking $150 for the cable. Ithink this is ridiculous because if I knew the pinouts I could make that cable for $10 myself and even safe on shipping. I think I won't buy the cable and stick with the Psfc. thanks for your input. Edward, I have a Sony EVO-9650 Hi8 that I've been using to record animations, and have decided to sell the Hi8, and start laying my animations to my VO-9850. How's the quality going directly to the VO-9850?? Also, in the times you quoted, I assume you've already rendered the frames or images, and you're talking about the time it takes the controller to position, preroll, and actually perform the frame record?? As I said, I'm used to the Hi8, and this little jewel has a buffer built in that enables me to set the delay between frames to 0 seconds, and render away…. Jerry

Jerry you won't be dissapointed. The quality is great and I have yet to see a dropout. I use SONY tapes. I compare it with my JVC and even in SVHS U-matic is still better. I use the JVC at home for preview purposes only and I do my real work in the studio on the 9850. I was thinking of getting a Y/C plus, but I think a UTP-2 transcoder from panasonic will be alot better for me since it goes composite in and DUB688 out. I think this combination will give better results than Y/C plus to a SVHS deck. even though I have never seen an example of the latter. What SFC are you planning to get? Good luck. Thanks for the reply. It convinced me to go ahead and get a PSFC like you have. I'll admit that I was totally blown away by the quality difference between Hi8/SVHS and the 3/4" SP; sure, the S-Video formats have a touch more sharpness, but that sharpness also tends to magnify the lower quality, IMHO. I shoot my footage on Hi8, and dub it to 3/4" SP on its very first playing. After that, I can edit and edit and edit, and see virtually no degradation of quality. I'm thrilled with the format.
