#scsi.device from where ?

Hi out there,
Recently i bought a Toshiba XA 3401B external CD ROM drive with
scsi interface. It works great on my 486 PC but i'd like to hook
it up to my Amiga 3000T as well, but could not find the scsi.device
needed to do so on any of my 2.04 Amiga-Dos system discs.
Does anyone know where to get this from ?

What is your SCSI controller? What machine are you using? If you have
a machine with a SCSI controller in it (A3000), then scsi.device is in the
DEVS: directory. However, if you don't have a SCSI controller in the Amiga,
then you need to get one before you can use that drive. Tell me a bit more
about your Amiga hardware (model, etc.) and if you have a SCSI controller what
brand is it, if not built-in.
On the A3000, the Scsi.device is in the rom and replaces harddisk.device.

I think you will also find a scsi.device file for those programs or
devices which look for a file in the devs: directory. Leastwise, I have one on
my 3000, although it's possible I might have taken it from another source.

thx for message. I am using the A-3000 T and i learned
from Brian and Don that the scsi.device is in the machine's ROM.
I installed/mounted the CD-file system from ASIMware and the
fixxa program i downloaded from CIS since Toshiba's XA3401b delivers
data at higher rates then other CD ROM drives to the machine and it's
working fine now. I do not have any AMIGA CD-ROMs yet, but i can
read the directory contents and text files from MS-DOS CD-ROMs at
good speed.

If he has an A3000 then forget scsi.device in any drawer anywhere – it is
in the ROM.

Yep, I know. He has a 4000 and Amax. He can't get Amax to work with a
2091 scsi controller. Apparently when the controller is mounted it creates a
new task, 2nd.scsi.device, but when he tries to run Amax it can't find
2nd.scsi.device and won't boot. Someone else mentioned that Amax won't work on
a 4000 with the 2091, so that may be the answer to his problem, unless someone
else comes up with a better solution.

You should look into getting a CD program like Asim CDFS or alike. I run
the above with a NEC CD-Rom Reader. Could'nt be simpler…
When the CD-RR is on, and you boot-up, the CD will be automatically be
recognized and you can use it as another volume like work:. Keeping in
mind it is read only.

Hi Gary,
I learned that the scsi.device is in the machine's ROM !
I installed/mounted the CD Filesystem from ASIMware and
the fixxa program i downloaded from CIS. The fixxa is needed
since the Toshiba xa3401 cd rom drive delivers data at high speed
to the machine. Works great ! I do not have any Amiga CDs yet
but can handle directories and text files of other ROMs at
good speed.

On the 3000, (and 3000T) the scsi.device is in the ROM. That's the easy
part. The not-so-easy part, you'll need a CD-ROM "filesystem" to let the
Amiga find the files on the disk. (PC equivalent: MSCDEX.EXE)

I've tried ASIMware's and CPR's. CPR's is rock solid. ASIM's killed my C
debugger when used with my Texel drive (only generated a 173k "enforcer
hit" file in 10 minutes…). Some really oddball interaction between
ASIM's software and the C= "SCSI bus handler" task. Not fun.

thx for help, didn't know that the machine has the scsi.device in
the ROM. MS-DOS machines should learn from that ! I installed/mounted
the ASIMware CD filesystem and the fixxa s/w the Amiga needs to cope
with the high speed of Toshibas XA3401 CD drive. Since i do not have
any AMIGA CD ROM yet, i fooled arround with my MS-DOS roms and it
reads
directory contents and .txt files at terrific speed.

Do you have Enforcer? If so, please run it, and see if ASIMCdfs generates
any "Hits." Or, if you have SAS/C, just try to debug a program. If
CodePRobe guru's the machine, AsimCDFS needs work. I mention this because
this is why I can't use AsimCDFS.

The Toshiba XM 3401B gives good overall performance on my Amiga 3000T.
However, since i do not have any Amiga specific CD yet, i just fooled
arround with .txt files of MS DOS CDs. I am using the drive (external)
on both machines (Amiga 3000T and 486/33 DX PC) and it gives me much
pleasure.
BTW, do you know any good photo-cd s/w for the Amiga ?

I don't think there's any photo-cd software out for the Amiga yet.
Something about licensing. Anyone interested in developing Photo-CD
support gets to pay Kodak some serious $$$.

In all seriousness (and I have had about a many strange scsi problems as
anyone alive), the C= scsi bus is the best around. Drives built to full
scsi standards seem to work consistantly and reliably on Amigas.
OTOH there are one heck of a lot of drives that either implement only part
of the standard or "tailor" their design for some special abomination. In
the former group are the hugh numbers of PC based scsi peripherals (one
device per card) and the latter group is dominated by Mac drives.

My, probably more limited experience is that C= is less forgiving of these
"oddball" scsi devices. If they "had" to use the Mac-B**tardised scsi
connection, they could be more forgiving of other device's oddities.
Especially given that my CD-ROM drive has some (oddities, that is).

It is a tough problem. The Ami has been pretty good about "believing" a
device when it "says" that it can do something. The trouble is that lots
of devices say that they can do things that they can not.
Since they were scsi drives that did obey the specs and honoring the specs
gave the Ami a much faster, better performing scsi device it seems
reasonable that C= choose to go with the standard.
I admit, like you, that it is a real pain when you are trying to add
something and find that the "something" does not follow the spec. It is
made a great deal worse by the arrogant attitude of device manufactures.
They generally refuse to tell you anything about what they have or have
not done as far a scsi standard compliance is concerned.

scsi.device is built into the ROM on the 3000's motherboard. That's
why you can boot from it…it doesn't have to be loaded from the disk.

Brain gave you advice on ASIMware and CPR's drivers – I think the Xetec drivers
are a better buy. Check out my articles on CDROM in the March and August '92
issues of AmigaWorld.
