#map recommendation

I am looking for an atlas on CD for use with genealogy, preferably one with a Windows interface. My primary need is locating counties for specific towns. The atlas needs to have all counties and all the towns for every state. I currently use the maps in "The World Book Encyclopedia," but I now have The Software Toolworks "Multimedia Encyclopedia" by Grolier. From an information standpoint, it is better than "The World Book," but the state maps lack detail. I called The Software Toolworks and inquired about their "US Atlas" CD, but they said it does not have many towns. Can someone make a recommendation? –Rocky

Try DeLorme Mapping's, Street Atlas USA. Available at most software dealers or by calling DeLorme at 207-865-4171.

As far as towns, cities, etc. Nothing beats "Street Atlas" by Dlorme. Its great and does windows, too

Here's another vote for Street Atlas, with one caveat: While it does have detailed, street-level maps of every town, I'm not sure if it has county info. I'd check for you now, but I'm at work & the CD's at home — good thing too, or I'd never get any work done! <g> I'll try to remember to take a look tonight, or you might want to give Delorme a call – they're in Freeport, ME, but I don't have the phone # here either. Rocky, Street Atlas by DeLorme is the best map product that I have seen. And if you want to travel the world by desktop, try DeLorme's new Global Explorer.

Hi again, Rocky. I meant to get back to you sooner regarding county names in Street Atlas; hopefully, this info is still useful. As far as I could tell, Street Atlas doesn't show county names on its maps; it just shows boundaries. One product that I overlooked and haven't seen mentioned that might help you is Automap. (Of course, it comes on old-fashioned diskettes — can we still talk about that here, Rich? <g>) It's got a lot of small towns in its database, plus you can configure it to show county names. Might be worth looking into. It comes in Windows and non-Windows versions. Evan

Rocky, Street Atlas DOES show county lines if you look closely enough. I believe county and town borders are shown as green dashed lines. There's a text files in the package called features.tbl that appears to control the way features are drawn. Since you're interested in county lines, you may want to change the file to make county lines a little more prominant. Unfortunately, Delorme gives no documentation describing how the file works.
