#Trying to get help

<I'm trying to do an animation and could use some help.
I have a solid cylinder that morphs to being transparent. Then tubes from
outside the frame connect to each inlet and outlet. I need to show liquid
(color or design not critical) flowing into 8 tubes and filling part of a
cylinder. When the liquid reaches the cylinder fins rotate. There are also 8
outlets from the cylinder that the liquid will flow through. (I've uploaded the
cylinder <CYL02.GIF – Lib #9>). Could someone help me with the liquid?

The scroll rate for messages is currently about 4 days to a week before a
message will scroll off. Most likely, whatever software you are using has a
function to only retrieve messages that have been posted since the last time
you visited the forum.
(Mine does this automatically. For example, if I log off, and log right back
on, it will show NO messages in the forum. This is because it scans for
messages since the last time I was here, which was just 1 minute ago. In order
to see messages from earlier, I must set a date from which to scan for
messages. In my copy of WINCIM, I do that under the MESSAGES/SET DATE command.)

I guess because it's the first time uploading anything I'm a little (ALOT)
sensitive.
I'm rather new to 3ds and I've seen some of the others fabulous work.

You might check out Schreiber's new Python PXP IPAS3 routine, Mark. It's said
to morph along paths in such a way as to effect liquid moving thru tubes, etc.
You could give 'em a call – 1/800/252/1024.
That being said, animated texture/opacity maps might be the key otherwise.
Making them as a flic in AApro would be one way of doing it.

Would you apply your animated texture map to the tube itself? This would work
as far as the tube goes, the color would change as the liquid moves, but it
wouldn't provide for a surface of the liquid inside the tube itself.
Would you also have some kind of disk or something inside the tube, moving
inside the tube at the same time the map moves? Or what other alternatives have
you thought of for the surface?

After applying mapping coordinates to the *liquid* (assuming the tube is
transparent, like glass) *during lofting*, Brian, one could use a combination
of Opacity, Texture, and even a Bump (SXP?) map to simulate many kinds of
movement thru the tube. I'm not intimate with the project, so I couldn't
comment on what would specifically be the proper way to get the appropriate
effect in this case.
That being said, the Schreiber Python PXP sure sounds interesting, and may
replace this sort of procedure for many applications.

I just ordered both the python and pages IPAS from schreiber. They told me the
Python is ideal for easily making great 3D mesh of animated handwriting. This
is a great dayfor 3DS as these two movements have been sorely lacking in 3DS
until now. Two more areas that 3DS has now got Topas beat. Once I have these
IPAS routines the only reason to launch Topas now is for raytracing and
opticals. What ever happened to that guy that announced the development of a
raytracer for 3DS files?
I've gotta agree that things are REALLY taking shape for us 3DS folks, Don. I
know this stuff is what you've been waiting for (I thought of you when I saw
the Page Turn routine). The Schreiber catalog was great news about our
increased capabilities and the Yost stuff is gonna be mind-blowing. Add to all
this the speed/affordability of the Pentium (mine is so fast at *everything*),
and we're in pretty good shape. Could ya let us know how you do with these
(Python, Pages) routines?
Regarding the 3DS raytracer: You may be talking about the author of the
"Mastering 3D Studio" book, Tom Payne. As far as I know, These guys had just
about dropped off the face of the 3DS earth until I noticed Tom's name as a
author of an article in the latest 3DA. It wasn't my copy (still haven't gotten
mine), so I didn't look too closely yet. I coulda' swore someone was writing
another 3DS/RT solution, but I just can't recall right now. Maybe someone else
remembers…

Thanks for the suggestions on flowing liquid. I will give Schreiber a call
Monday about Python PXP IPAS3.
I have enough info to try a couple of different things. If I get anything that
works I'll let you know.
