#Desktop Video World
28 messages in this thread
For those who might be interested, the premiere issue of Desktop Video
World is now starting to appear. We got them in the office last week, they
will be available at MacWorld Expo next week, and subscribers and
newsstands should see them any time soon.
Let me know what you think after you get a chance to look ait over.
Lou
Congrats on getting the new magazine out the door!
Steve
Thanks Steve. The first issue is always 'special', and while we think it is
quite good, it's also the baseline of where we want to go. Each issue will
get better as readers respond to what they like, didn't like, want and
need…. Lou
Is this magazine on the shelfs already?

Don't know…I haven't seen it yet.
Steve
Steve (+ Anthony),
At MacWorld today in SF I picked up the premiere of Desktop Video World.
The cover lists these stories:
DTV Studio, Build it yourself.
4 Hot Morphing Tools
Personal Paintboxes
Full Motion Video
Video Toaster Expansion
Plus:
2D & 3D Animation Software
QuickTime Buyer's Guide
Advanced Video Displays
Spotlight on Video Editing
hey are equally covering Amiga, Dos and Macs. Commodore has the inside
back cover and Newtek has the outside back cover. OpalVision has the
second two pages of advertising.
I can't comment on the editorial, reviews, or story depth yet. The layout
is very nice, the graphics are well done, too.
Jan
Thanks for the info, Jan! I looked for it yesterday at the bookstore,
and unfortunately I didn't see it. Guess I have to wait a while longer.
Steve
Steve, I found DTV world at the local B. Dalton Bookseller today. It looks
good, but I've only had a chance to thumb through it.
Jim
Thanks…I'll wander over to the mall and take a look.
Steve
Jan,
What did you think of the show? I went and it made me sad. All of those
people hawking and drooling over Desktop Video, Quicktime, Multimedia. The
Amiga can do all of this so much better. Too bad it doesn't have just half
the support.
-Richard
Richard,
I think it made me glad I chose an Amiga 7 years ago (for my personal
computer use) over a MacPlus. I don't believe in envying others' tools.
Aristically (musicaly and visually) the Amiga has been able to do much
more than I needed, non-commercially. And I've never been able to justify
purchasing a Mac for home.
For the last 7 years, I have been employed by various companies who needed
Mac help. Networking, DTP, Graphics, etc. Appropriate technology is
where I'm at.
What I did find interesting was the lack of anything really 'special' at
Mac World. I've been to all of them, and there's usually something that
stands out as a hot and deep tool. Marc Cantor's 'VideoWorks' was real
exciting about 6 years(?) ago, now it's the 'Clones of MacroMind Director
XX'. HoHum!
Now if only my AmaxII+ would work on my 4.3 motherboard 2000!
Jan
ps Are you in SF?
Jan,
I'm in the East Bay. I too am glad I chose the Amiga route. I was
pretty entrenched in the Mac thing but for some weird reason opted for an
A3000 over a IIci about three years ago, haven't regretted it yet. I do
wish that something of the muscle that has gone into putting Macs where
they are now had gone into the Amiga. We'd be years ahead of where we are
now.
Really wasn't anything new. SuperMac was showing their new digital
video editor. Appears fairly similar to DMI digital editor but costs about
six grand more. As usual the Newtek booth was as popular as any there. IBM
even had a booth. Seems like C= and some other Amiga vendors could have
prospered. Wish I were a hardware type, I'd hack a 1200 into the Mac's
video output to liven up those quicktime movies. Probably move a few
Amigas in the backdoor that way.
-Richard
I would call Supermacs DigitalFilm and RasterOpps MoviePak significant.
Both are shipping, full motion record and playback video cards. I would
love one. Of course, DMI is getting closer with Digital Editmaster, which
should be a serious video card… Lou
Lou,
I assume that you're suggesting The SuperMac and Rasteropps units
surpass the DMI Editmaster by your statement "getting closer". What are
the price and performance differences in these units?
-Richard
I'm not suggesting anything. However, both Mac cards are shipping, while
the DMI card isn't – yet.
Ah- That's what "getting there" meant. Loved DTV. My subscription card is
in the mail. Hope it flys.
-Richard
Thanks for the info, I'll be bothering everybody now until I find it.

AAAAAARRRRRGHHH! I'm eager to receive it! I ordered it via phone!
Best Wishes for this Year, Lou… I know this new magazine will help us
all who work with Computers&Video… your experience is our
"satisfaction-guarantee" !!
Jorge Escobar/MEGABYTE PRODUCTIONS (..and AutoPilot, of course!)
I found DTV at a local bookstore last night and bought a copy. Full of
interesting stuff, coverage tilted ever so slightly toward the IBM
platform. Lots of product reviews and such.
Jerry
Heh! So far I've been told DTV World is "too much Amiga…" "Obviously Mac
oriented" and now "tilted slightly toward IBM…".
I think we got a pretty good mix if we're getting all three comments.
Lou
Hey! I finally found DTV World! Thanks for talking about the EVO-9650.
I've been looking high and low for information about that box, and your
magazine was the first place I've seen anything about it. Looks like a
nice little box, and just the thing for a serious animation hobbyist.
Steve
Steve,
Though I haven't read DTV's review, there's a good review you should look
at in Video Toaster User Oct/Nov 1992 issue. It covers the machine very
throughly. Give it a look.
Jorge Escobar/MEGABYTE PRODUCTIONS (..and AutoPilot, of course!)
Lou,
I just picked up a copy of DTV World this weekend. I'm very impressed! I
am a video amateur that got into DTV in September of 1991 with the purchase
of an accelerated Amiga, Video Toaster, two TBC's, etc. Since then I have
added a Panasonic AG-7750 for single-frame recording, two Panasonic
AG-1960's and a Sony EV-S3000. So you can see that I am serious about
video even though an amateur. What I liked about DTV World is the
comprehensive coverage across platforms. I don't feel any sense of bias
toward any of the platforms, and this is quite refreshing! I love my
Amiga, but I run a Mac Quadra at work and my wife has a new 486 50 MHz PC
clone here in the room with my Amiga. DTV World has been my first chance
to really see software comparisons across platforms. I am very pleased
with your premier issue. I look forward to future issues with the hope
that some of the areas (e.g. video editing software and hardware,
non-linear video editing, synchronizing sound and video, etc.) will be
followed up by further in depth treatments of these subjects. Like all
editiors I am sure you get too much advice, but let me offer one comment.
DTV is not for everyone. The people who read your magazine will be looking
to go beyond the "basics" so include some reviews and articles that go
beyond the introductory stage. I also feel that it is appropriate for DTV
World to review peripherals (hard drives, etc.) that are a necessary part
of a DTV environment. For example, I recently purchased a 1.2 GB
Micropolis HD for use with the SunRize AD516 board. The rather high cost
of this investment and my difficulty in getting information about high
capacity drives gave me great cause for concern. Fortunately, the
Micropolis has turned out to be a great drive for audio/video uses, but a
review of such equipment would have been a great help. DTV World is
without doubt the best treatment of DTV that I have seen to date. I sent
my subscription card in today and eagerly look forward to future issues.

Lou,
Maybe you should run a contest with the grand prize of 3 video
workstations, one based on each platform! Second prize could be your
choice of… Then you could figure out how much readership falls into
each camp, and be prepared for incomming based on who gets the cover or
feature each month as well as create a defense against favoritism :^}
wmc – via Autopilot!
I don't know if a contest would give an accurate readership makeup figure.
But if you really do want a contest – get issue one! It does have a contest
in it. All you do is fill out the reader survey, mail or fax it to us and
you are entered. The prize is a very nice camcorder. Lou
The important thing, Lou, is that it's making people talk about it…
Where is *my* copy!!!
Jorge Escobar/MEGABYTE PRODUCTIONS (..and AutoPilot, of course!)
Just got my issue of DTV World and you can expect my Sub card in
soo.Haven't read it yet just flipping thru and it looks good.It came with
