Anyone. please tell me what is the quickest download protocol to use. Also,
does anyone know if/how you can determine what baud rate you are connected at
while on line?

I set my software (CIM 2.04) up to log on at certain speeds – this is standard
in all comm. packages somewhere. Also, CIS tells you what speed you logged on
at. Get yourself some decent s/w for communication and it'll take the worry out
of this kind of stuff.
_The_ fastest protocol is Zmodem (for big files), but the w*nkers at CI$ don't
use it cause they wouldn't make as much money. That leaves us with CIS B+ which
CI$ allows.

I wish I could laugh about it too, but I regularly need to download huge files
(almost up to the 2mb e-mail limit) and the situation of not supporting Zmodem
is almost criminal. I think I'm going to start protesting to the CI$ people
soon.

Using CIS B+ on a 14,400 baud node I regularly get file transfers at 1600 cps.
And I do believe that ZMODEM is supported under some circumstances. Check your
comm program and the download defaults you are presently using, and also check
CIS defaults you have set. GO TERMINAL for this or GO MAIL to check out what
you have that set for.

something must be wrong because I don't think I get anything like 1600cps which
is what I get with Zmodem transfers at 14400 baud on other networks.
I use CIM 2.04 which won't tell me what data rate I'm getting, nor does it
support 14400. I figure CIM is the problem and it probably has artificial wait
states or something in it (conspiracy theory <G>). I don't want to give up the
friendly front end to CI$ but I do need a faster downloader and would like to
know the cps speed. I downloaded OZCIS but I'm loath to spend time setting it
up when I've got no time in my life anymore 🙁 Oh well, I'd better bite the
bullet and give OZCIS a try.
There must be something weird with the software you use (CIM). I get 1.6k with
ZIP files and way over that with "regular" files (like message threads). I use
OzCIS which isn't any software masterpiece. In fact, it stinks when it comes to
serial port handling.

It's beginning to sound a lot like it. Probably some deliberate slowdown
routines or something <g>. Well, I've had enough of it and will try and get
OZCIS going this weekend, either that or Telix which seems to be a nice
shareware comm program – should at least work well for the e-mail downloads.

Let me know if you have any problems with OzCIS this weekend. It has worked
wonderfully for me for years on the 14,400 node in Newport Beach!

That's very kind of you, thanks. First of all I need to find the closest 14.4k
number which may well be Newport Beach. What number is it, BTW?

The best would be to "GO PHONES" and get a listing of all the phone numbers
with cities in the 714 area code and choose the closest to you!

Despite Gus's complaint about the serial port handling, I found Ozcis to be
very good for my purposes (reading daily forum messages and maintaining a
catalog of files available from the libraries).
I haven't tried CIM, but I did use Tapcis. Ozcis is MUCH better than that was.

I'm vowing to try OZCIS and the new 14,400 node in my area this weekend.
Get a terminal package with "Compuserve Quick B" protocol. It's the fastest
available here. (Although Zmodem might be faster on other systems.)
The fastest protocol is Y-modem G if you are using an MNP modem and can get an
MNP link. Z-modem is the fastest in most other modes, and it supports crash
recovery. The modem will spit out a result code for the modem speed when get
connected with another modem — This may have to be initialized in your setup
string (verbal result codes) –
