#Boolean Weirdness

I am in the middle of creating a new starship and using the boolean function is causing some problems. Basicially I have an extruded disk in the background and whenever I use it in SUBTRACT mode parts of the background object appear on the foreground object. Both objects are single sided polygons and both are 3D objects. This problem seems to plauge me whenever I am dealing with a complex foreground object (sometimes even not so complex). The points in all objects are merged, polys are unified. Are there any SECRET Tips on how to get the Boolean functions to cooperate? Thanks in advance. Anthony E.T.

Anthony, Make your extruded disk in the background layer multi-segmented and see if that helps. JG

Hi John, I've tried multi-segmenting the background object to no avail. That works on basic shapes it seems but not on more complex ones. I've gotten around the problem temporially by repairing the carved object after the boolean subtract (whew!). I've noticed this problem even when I try to carve two box type shapes. Sometimes it works without a hitch and sometimes it doesn't. Weird heh? Has anyone in this forum had this problem????

I'm just plain convinced boolean subtract will not work with complex objects. It's definitely broken. I tried 65 different combinations and only two worked. –Paul < Motorola Inside >

Hmmm. I use it alot and have no problems. Make sure you have no ununified polys or other weird things going on before you do it. JG

John- it can happen with the most simple objects, 12 polys. They are perfect, all points on their own and polys unified. Some shapes are guarenteed to fail every time. –Paul < Motorola Inside >
