No Way to De-Flicker ?
17 messages in this thread
Well I'm stymied,
Does anyone out there who has a 17" monitor similar to a Nanao 550iw have
a good flicker type card to make it work.
I had a perfectly good system for years and decided to upgrade. I had a
Taxan 770 multiscan and FFV 1. I sold the Taxan for first a Viewsonic 17
and then the Nanao. The FFV 1 wouldn't work with either of them. Thought
it was a bad FFV and got another FFV 1 from ICD. Nope same problem. Bought
a FFVII from them which was adjustable somewhat and boom the AT&T chip on
it fried in less than an hour. "Well that was the older model chip" so got
another FFVII and it lasted for about 10 hours before it was hot enough to
fry eggs on.
So, I figured I'll just get a new 24 bit board, like the Retina, and
display everything through it. Great, a bit expensive but it does seem to
do the job. Only problem, and it is indeed a problem, I can't get the
Toaster to run with it. Contacted Macrosystems. "Well the switcher display
is not display compatible. Run the toaster first from your 1084 then run
the Retina." Ok, did that toaster runs now but all the DV channels are
locked.
Is this really that big of a problem ? I'm really enjoying this Nanao 17"
for the Windows side but am getting tired of doing backflips trying to get
my Amiga up and running.
Plus, now I am likely going to lose a customer who expects a tape mailed
tomorrow after several delays already because of my hardware problems. I
may buy my Taxan back and reinstall my FFV 1.

What do you mean "all the DV channels are locked"? Except for that, do things
work OK (considering)?
Well,
After booting up the toaster first, you can click on dv1 and then dv2 on either
the Main or the Preview buss and the display will switch to whatever is in DV1
or DV2 or the Video input channel. Then after starting the Retina and switching
back to the toaster, clicking on DV1,DV2 etc has no effect. Whatever was the
last thing displayed on the monitor stays. You can no longer switch. Shutting
down the Retina allows normal operation of the Toaster again.
And all this is with no Workbench emulation by the Retina etc.
Rocky
>And all this is with no Workbench emulation by the Retina etc.
What? I thought that was one of the Retina's strong points.
Paul
Yes the Retina does a very good job of the workbench but I was trying to
disable it to get the toaster running. It was in fact the only way I could get
the toaster to come up without a "unable to genlock" message.
However, even with the workbench option disabled (that is just running programs
on their own screens) I still am unable to use it with the toaster running.
What they mean in all of the ads about it being compatible with the toaster I
don't know.
It must mean that their is no explosion when both boards are plugged into the
same motherboard.
Rocky
Hummph. Have you asked MacroSystems directly?
Paul
Yes,
Macrosystems is the one who told me I would have to shut it down to run the
Switcher on the toaster.
Rocky
Did they explain what the hell they meant by Toaster compatability? This
makes absolutely no sense! I guess you know that by now. ;^(
Paul
My sentiments exactly.
Rocky
One problem with disabling the "normal" 1084 interface is that you deprive the
Toaster of one of its main data feeds from the Amiga. The Amiga can only
communicate with the Toaster with the video port and the parallel port; there
is no direct (Zorro) bus interface. NewTek puts lots of control information in
the vertical interval of the monitor video. And, when you start one of the
complex wipes, the entire monitor video bandwidth is used for control
information.
So, what's this mean for the guy who wants to run some good clean monitor video
out to a high-quality monitor? I don't think anyone has figured out a solution
just yet. Most are opting for good multi-sync monitors and cringing while
working in LW3D.

Bruce,
Thanks for the very technical info.
I was trying to run the toaster just through it's standard video port. I
thought that when I ctrl ctrl alt alt out of the Retina program I was
running (my Editor) and the input switched over to my 1084 that I was
complying with all that.
Now Macrosystems tells me that no you are still running the display to the
Retina so you will have to shut that down to go to the toaster.
Hardly acceptable to me. I can't be quitting the editor while using the
toaster.
The retina is going back. I'm not much of an artist anyway. I was hoping to
use it for toasterpaint cause I can't get used to all that scrolling around.
Rocky
I understand InnoVision (Broadcast Titler II, MONTAGE) is coming out with a
ToasterPaint replacement called Alpha Paint. You might want to check it out
with them.
Ok,
Thanks Bruce.

Isn't that what the SyncStrainer product is for? i.e., to make the Toaster
more useable with a multisync? I don't have a Toaster but I just saw one
of these gizmos in an Amiga store for about 50 bucks. It looked like a
monitor adapter but the dealer set me straight.

The Sync Strainer re-generates the necessary H and V sync signals for
multi-sync monitors. The monitors still must be able to sync down to an H rate
of 15.7kHz. And even then, you will be looking at NTSC video, complete with
interlace flicker if field 1 and field 2 are very different (as with LW3D).

Didn't we do this once before 🙂
I wish I could help, I have the Nanao F550iw and it is a dandy. It works
with a FFV I for me and my Toaster with no problems.
Hope you get it nailed soon.

Paul,
Hi just the man I needed to talk to . I couldn't remember who it was that had
this combo.
Yeah initially I had put up the problem of trying to use the FFV 1 with a
Viewsonic 17 and came to the conclusion that I needed to switch and get the
Nanao 550iw which you said worked for you.
Well I had the same problem with the Nanao and the FFV 1. Got another FFv 1
from ICD and still no go. Then they sent me a FFV 2 because it was somewhat
adjustable and it seemed to work. Then the FFV 2 's main At&t chip fried
itself. Sent me another FFV 2 and it worked about a week before it fried too.
I think there is a problem with my motherboard of power supply at this point. I
am looking for a replacement now even to use as a spare for parts.
Could you tell me exactly how you have your screen mode and overscan setup.
Also I guess you have Multiscan picked as a monitor type.
What do you run it on the Viewsonic. Have you tried 800 x 600 .
Thanks,
Rocky
