Bill, It doesn't look good for the Amiga, although, I heard a rumor that Phillips may be interested in the CD32 and AMIGA hardware. Personally, I may eventually buy a Macintosh POWER PC. In the meantime, I have gotten more than enough good fun and learning (as well as some income) from the AMIGA. All things come to an end. By the way, a while back someone was trying to put together a consotium to buy control of commodore. Maybe this would be a good time for them to buy control of the product line. Its a thought? Paul

Maybe someone should look at porting the Amiga OS to PowerPC (on Workplace OS). It could be touted as a production studio OS and allow hooks to NT, AIX and OS/2 (and whatever else is available on Workplace OS). Anyhow, I think the PC and MAC people have gotten pretty smart and maybe even learned from the Amiga operating system. I would be hard pressed to believe that Commodore could keep selling hardware. I used to love my Amiga system, but I hated the marketing strategies and I hated the fact that my software kept becoming incompatible whenever Commodore decided to enhance their OS. One persons opinion. Bill Raymond Intec Controls

I wouldn't be surprised to see the Amiga OS ported to the Power PC. There's already a 680X0 emulator available for the chip — otherwise they wouldn't be able to do Mac emulation — so Amiga OS emulation would be largely a copyright, rather than technical, problem. Wonder who will inherit the Amiga OS copyright now that Commodore has called it quits? –Chris

True but you'll need about a 100mhz 604 to pull off all the sub-tasks handled by the custom chips, in a manner your accustomed to looking at. (read smooth, flowing graphics). Matt Straney in Grand Ledge.

A teacher of mine at college had a chance to try out the Mac Power PC, and said it wasn't as good as the hype. He's a Mac devotee. He said he may get one in the future, but after trying it out, he's not in that big of a hurry. -= Vance =- Image Master Flying high on Imagine and Imagemaster R/t!

Mac programs reportedly don't show impressive speed gains on the Power PC, but that's because 680X0 programs are emulated rather than directly executed by the CPU. Native applications for the Power PC supposedly run quite a bit faster than Mac apps. Your teacher probably tried to run Mac apps on his machine; if he tries some native apps he'll probably be a great deal more impressed. Personally, I'm waiting to see how well Intel-based apps run on the PPC. <g> –Chris

Personally, I'm waiting to see *any* apps for PPC. *B^) Oh, it'll all be sorted out. But my instructor was right. Why be in a hurry to buy the new hardware, when the software isn't ready yet. -= Vance =- Image Master Flying high on Imagine and Imagemaster R/t!

I have the PhotoShop PowerPC plug-in running on my PowerMac 7100, and about 80% of the program now runs in native-mode. I'd say there is about a 2-4x speed increase, the more RAM you have, the more noticeable the speed increase. I've also had a chance to play with a high-end Mac 3D program that is beta-testing their native PPC version. Huge difference. Still, some of system 7 is still running in emulation, which will probably be the case till next fall. Also, there are still some SCSI bugs, the system is about as stable as my DOS platform…heh. Andrew.

All new computers start out with bugs to shake out. I remember the A1000 and ADOS 1.1-1.3. Woof! *B^) What's the name of that high-end Mac 3D renderer that you played with? -= Vance =- Image Master Flying high on Imagine and Imagemaster R/t!

My PowerPC bugs are pretty minor, and since the Mac has the only desktop color management tools, I have to run PhotoShop on some sort of Mac platform. Can't say which 3D program it is, I'd get someone in trouble. Andrew.

Andrew, Have you gotten the PPC version of Infini-D yet or tried it? What did you think of it?
#81867From: andrew mcdonaldMay 13, 1994 7:32 PM
I'm not a big fan of Infini-D, I already have too many options in 3D, essentially, that's a lateral step for anyone with Imagine.

Thanx for the info Andrew. I just got my 3.0 today. Happy Happy Joy Joy. Do you still call Trade N Post???? There accumulating a rather LaRGE amount of 3D models online.
#81948From: andrew mcdonaldMay 14, 1994 2:18 PM
I haven't called Trade N Post in ages, don't even have there number anymore. I pretty much build everything I need now, hate my stuff to look like anyone else.

I can't say I really Blame you for not calling TNP anymore, there's ALOt of Bickering on their between Chris Liendo and the younger users/abusers He'll state something and then the Peanut Gallery will jump all over him. Sometimes he is wrong but he takes alot of heat. I hardly model anything these days. I'm too lazy to create new models if I can find one already ,made to suit my needs. I only resort to modeling when absolutely neccessary.

Did I get any new models??? On the Imagine 3.0 disk you mean? Not really, there's a Cow model and a Model of a Hand for a Tutorial on Bones.
#82059From: Vance SchowalterMay 15, 1994 2:58 PM
Oh well, better than nothing. *B^) I'm getting to be pretty good at modelling now, so it's not as big a concern anymore. -= Vance =- Image Master Flying high on Imagine and Imagemaster R/t!

Peter, You got the new Apex newsletter? Steve promised to send me one when I ordered Forge. I've been using Forge for 3 weeks now and still no newsletter. :^( By the way, what would I have to do to get a copy of your Gumby model. I've been trying to get a real Gumby to trace for building a model, but they're impossible to find. I've had an animation floating around the back of my mind for a few months, but I need a Gumby before I can start rendering. Jeff H…

I havn't had much time in the last 2 weeks to play with 3.0. I guess that is good in a way, have been busy with 2D animations. Both newsletters showed up here. I'm gonna have to order the Apex stuff. Jim R. Ollick Using AP from Bergenfield, NJ
