Hi, Evan:
Sounds like you've done some thorough research into monitors. I'm in the
market for a 17" & I'm having a tough time deciding between the IDEK, MAG &
ViewSonic 17" . They sell for relatively the same price but, naturally, no
store stocks them all so it's tough to compare aside from the specs — which
are close.
(The IDEK & Mag are .26mm dot pitch, the ViewSonic .28 & all 1280×1024).
Any advice?

In my humble opinion (IMHO elsewhere), the NEC 5FG is by far the best. But for
a lower budget, the IDEK almost always gets the best reviews. I also have a MAG
and it is great, but the NEC is just more solid and precise, corner to corner.

I returned the NEC because of tremendous screen glare. It's OK if you
operate in a room with no lights though. NEC's answer to the glare
problem is to stretch a mesh over the screen. Since I had this
monitor I thought I would add to your other comments which I agree
with.

I noticed you're using NAV-CIS (Dvorak's navigator) as opposed to C-Serve's
Navigator. Have you compared the two?

IMHO too, I use MAG MX-17F's at home and the office. For the money, I don't
think they can be beat. I can look at it all day (provided it's attached to a
decent grahics card) and it didn't leave my wallet empty for too long a time.
NEC's nice, if you can afford it, and I know nothing of the IDEK…
except I don't think I like their ads.
Yes, I know…"Awesome monitor, Killer Price!" In spite of the corny ad, I
broke down & bought one today (Idek) & I'm very impressed.

best choice. But not today. Let me be clear. The MAG and the
Viewsonic aren't even in the same class as the Idek VisionMaster 17.
And neither is the NEC. The VisionMaster is a $1,500 monitor that
happens to sell for $800.

Are you saying that the quality is comparable to a $1500 monitor, or that it
typically sells for $1500 but they changed the price?

I believe Evan is implying that the IDEK is a $1500 "value". It
retails for just $799, has a lower dot pitch than even the NEC 5FGP
(a $1500 monitor) @.26mm (the NEC is .28mm), and includes 3 years
parts & labor, it's "green", MPRII, 80 Hz, 1280×1024, color matching,
etc…

That sounds like a MAG MX-17F, like, a lot.
Color matching, as in software included or a calibration device
included? (Or, as any monitor is…) "Color calibration device available."
I guess it could be a fantastic monitor… I'm just sold on Mag's MX
series. Anyone seen the $1200 MAG MX-17FG?
To anyone;
PMJI, but I was wondering how the new Sony 17SE1 compares with the
Idek, Mag, NEC. It has comperable specs to the Idek, with a max
resolution of 1600×1200 at 60 hz 1280×1024 at 100hz, hardware color
calibration and of course a Sony Trinitron tube with .25 Dot screen
(Pitch). It can be found for about $1050 locally in the bay area and
$1099 through CDW ( not meaning to pitch, I get no cut <g>).
Anyway, has anyone looked into this new Sony?

I just purchased the Sony 17se last month and drive it with a Viper.
The monitor and picture are some of the best I've seen (IMHO). The
controls are up front and easy to use. I looked at the NEC and
although I liked the screen image the glare was terrible, and I'm
afraid the OPTIONAL glare filter would have taken away what I liked
about it (not to mention the additional cost).
I must say that I don't know how I worked with a 14" screen for so
long. 3DS run at 1024 (and Windows) look great and are rock steady.
The only question I have is about the color temperature control and
where I should set it.

I think that the Sony is the way to go, the dot pitch and scan rates top the
NEC and the qualit I imagine tops the Idek, so it was nice to hear about
someone who is pleased with one.
In regards to the color temp, I think the idea is to set one setting to a tone
that is comfortable to the eye, and ajust nother settings to match your hard
copy output.

I bought one yesterday & I'm very pleased with it.
Here's the scoop: IDEK Visionmaster 17"FST, .26mm dot pitch,
1280×1024 res @ 80Hz, color matching, auto scan, anti-glare, "green",
3yrs/3yrs incl. all for $799!
Sure, there are better monitors, but for the money you really can't
beat it.

The Idek is sold all over the various mail-order houses, but you're
pretty much going to find it everywhere (ie from Idek, local and
mailorder) for $799 — there's too little margin on it for discount.

The only problem now is that the monitor makes my damn graphics card
near obsolete! I've got to be the only idiot ever to buy a Volante
Warp 20/20-2. I'll beat you're thinking you never even heard of it,
right? It got great reviews (but I'm not sure why), they took out
full page ads in every 'puter publication (could this be the answer?)
& then vanished w/o a trace. (That's not entirely true, to be fair
they still have a BBS where you get to D/L the latest bug-fixes). I
want my $500 back!

I'm not sure I have heard of the Volante Warp 20/20, but figure that by buying
the IDEK you broke even. <g> Oh well…

I have a Matrox MGA-II with PCI, 2 megs… it will support the living
hell out of your monitor.
Why am I trying to sell it? I want to move up to 3-4 megs for higher
res 24-bit color. The card retails for $450, and I've used it for about 3 1/2
months for 24-bit graphics -only-, under Windows and 3DS. (I use a
dual-monitor setup)… I'll let the card go cheap, too.

I'd probably go with the MGA Impression of some variety depending on your
motherboard. If you get a version with Z-buffer you'll be able to run Pavel's
real-time preview IPAS, which would be pretty slick. Its in Beta now. You might
want to contact him to see if this is something you'd be interested in. I think
the MGA series is the fastest around.

Thanks for confirming my thoughts about the IDEK. It seems to be
the best value in a 17" monitor for under $1000.00, and comparable
(favorably) to those selling in the $1,500 range, yet it retails for
1/2 that price… I plan to purchase one tomorrow!

I have a friend with one, but I have never seen them side by side. My
other computer Monitor is a Mag innovision 15 inch I guess it's
fair. I have always run 3ds on the Nec and at times I wish it were
bigger.<g>
