#Pentium Problem
6 messages in this thread
I'm just testing a Pentium 66Mhz computer with 32MB internal and
SCSI-II fast 1.7GB harddisk. After a couple of frames renderd in
slave mode I get the foloowing message. "HEAPMGMT – heap error "
followed with some strange characters and a couple of raws down I get
"Cheap stack dump linked in => no dump."
I have tested with and without HIMEM, EMM386, SMARTDRV. Still getting
the above errormessage. Someone got any idee what is the problem?

Does it crash when you place a dongle on it and render from within 3ds?

Either of those errors mean that you've got a memory management problem in that
machine that Phar Lap is choking on. What kind of computer is that?

It's a company here in sweden that put's it together but the basic parts is:
Motherboard : Gigabyte
BIOS : Award Modular BIOS v4.50
(Mercury PCI_EISA BIOS Ver 3.4 FEB-22-94)
HD Controler: Buslogic SCSI-II BIOS ver 4.80
I don't know if this helps!!

hmmm…. Gigabyte motherboard, eh? If I were you, I'd try a different
system and see what happens. Do you have another computer around to
test with?

Yes, but all of them are 486/66DX2 and work great (also Gigabyte
mother -board). I think that they havn't tuned in every parameter in
the CMOS setup properly so I'm trying to change things one at a time
to se what happens. The strange thing is that it works for a while,
everything from 2 to 15 frames before the strange error message!? I
have just added one WAITSTATE for the RAM memmory acces and renderd
18 frames soo far and everything seems to work? Is the pentium to
fast for my RAM? I'll be back for more test reports.
Just a thought

What I realy would like to have is a testprogram to run on mashines
intended to be 3DS machines. That could realy force the system to
it's limmits. Some kind of benchmark and safety test. You will
propobly say "- You already have that test program 3D Studio- ever
heard about that!" But what would be nice is a slim
one-diskett-no-dongle program. That program could be sent out as a
test program to the hardware reseller saying -"Test this program and
phone me when you have the results". Then he could tune in the
computer for my or the customers needs. And one could more easely
test more than 2 or 3 systems before buying.
The program should test :
– Floating point math (speed and accurancy)
– RAM (speed and safety)
– SWAPDISK (speed and safety)
– SIMULATED RENDERING
could also test
– Display device (VIBRANT,RCPADI,VESA)
