#GPFax wont Recieve

My init string is the default that came with the program and it is set to USR modem. –> ATE0V1X4&D2S0=0&H2&B1 I have the modem DIP Sw set to auto answer and the auto answer light is on untill I start GPFax then it goes out. I've tried it in AA off – same. I'm curious about S0=0 in the init string, according to the USR book this disables AA. But the option screen gives me a choice of Auto Answer or not. I called USR and the guy who answered told me I need a special modem cable that supports Hardware Handshaking/Hardware Flow Control, but no one I talked to here knows of a difference in modem cables — is there a difference?? All the computer stores up here treat me like a leper or something when I mention that I have a superior Amiga.:) I've tried lower my standards and telling them I use IBM, but then they start asking questions about UARTS and things. George, Turn off AutoAnswer by having the S0=0 and the having the DIP switch off. This turns off AutoAnswer on the modem, but GPFax takes care of picking up the phone line. The setting in GPFax specifies software handshaking (XON/XOFF), so you want to make sure that your Prefs/Serial selection is set to XON/XOFF. I would recommend using RTS/CTS (hardware flow control) when using a high-speed modem. You will need to do the following: 1) Change your init string's &H2 to &H1 (this enables RTS/CTS flow control) 2) Change the Prefs/Serial to RTS/CTS 8N1 and alteast have a baud rate of 19200 for a 14.4 or 31250 for a 28.8 model 3) Get a hardware flow-control cable (also knows as a 7-wire cable or as a straight through serial cable) Hopefully, things should be working a bit better for you then. If you go to a PC store and they ask what type of UART chip, say you have a 16550 (16-bit) UART and that should take care of them. You actually don't have a 16550, but a UART is built into one of the custom chips (Denise, if I'm not mistaked). Christian; I tried some of your ideas about changing the INIT string and checking prefs/serial. I've got the modem working good in DATA mode now, both send and recieve. I havent had a chance to try recieve FAXS yet though. YOu said try using RTS/CTS and changing init string from &H2 to &H1. This is the default in the modem so I dont need this in the INIT string, or do I?? Another thing you said is to get a hardware flow control cable. How do I know what I have is or isnt this type. When I bought the cable it said MODEM Cable on the package. Are there different types, I thought all modem cables were the same. George Morrison Dazed and Confused on the A500

George, Glad to hear that your modem is working data wise pretty well now. How is it doing sending faxes? As for &H1, I would keep it in the init string. Some comm programs change the modem's active profile and it they change it to &H2, then you could have some problems with handshaking. I say keep it in there for good measure. Well, you could test the cable lines to see if you have a hardware handshaking cable. Or you could ask the people you bought the cable from. They're are three general categories on modem cables. 1) Standard Hayes cable – your normal type 2) Hardware handshaking cable (7-wire or straight through) – has wiring to control the RTS/CTS lines need for hardware handshaking 3) Null modem cable – changes the transmit and receive positions on the cable between connectors.
