At my place of employment, we have some file cabinets with the Commodore logo on them. Theyv'e been in the office for at least 10 years, but it was still interesting to see that they at one time did, or liscensed somebody to, manufacture office furnishings.

I think they sold off the steel products factory in Canada in about 1983. dale@iam.com http://www.iam.com Intangible Assets Manufacturing

The logo isn't exactly the same though. Bart Van Bockstaele at 100574.2352@compuserve.com … On AutoPilot and Amiga all the way from Belgium …

My recollection is that originally Commodore was a business equipment manufacturer or distibutor. It went into the computer business in one of its earlier "nine" lives. Bill

It's interesting to note that the Commodore name literally fell of the back of a truck… Many years back, I asked Jack Tramiel what caused him to select the name 'Commodore' for his company…. He said, "I knew I wanted a name that represented a military rank of some kind. 'General Electronics' was taken, as was 'Admiral', and I hadn't found the name I wanted. Then, one day, I was driving is West Germany, and saw a furniture truck with the name 'Commodore' on it; that was it!" –Jim

Do you know where they found the name Personal Electronic Transactor? Bart Van Bockstaele at 100574.2352@compuserve.com … On AutoPilot and Amiga all the way from Belgium …

Purely speculation on my part, but I suspect that Chuck Peddle (the designer of the first Commodore computer) conjured up the word PET as a follow-on to such items as "pet rocks" that were going around. The idea, I imagine, was to create an image of a computer as a friendly companion, as opposed to the general image of computers then as large, impersonal beasts. Again speculating, I think that Personal Electronic Transactor was thought up later as an explanation of the acronym PET.
