If someone wants to do an improved STARS (the latest is STARS3 which does
what STARS2 does plus is compatible with 48-bit color space and 16-bit Alpha
with gamma as introduced in r3, plus allows random starfields of user-definable
number of stars without having to run STARMAKE), here's an idea: how about
TWINKLING stars? Just do a fractalized random shift in hue, saturation, and
brightness for the generated stars over time! User-selectable, so outer-space
scenes don't have twinkling stars, while scenes set outdoors at night would
have them!
A new stars routine would be really cool, but if someone is going to create
a new stars they should also consider enviorments. For example a button
to create stars or clouds. Why not project fracticle clouds like Alias, And
also
be able to animate the settings like,-Time of day,# of clouds, color of
sky, color of clouds– . I have been waiting for a routine to do this.

Heck, as long as we're wishing . . .
How about a starfield generator that makes nice motion blurred stars in 3D so
you can fly _through_ them — like the ones we seen on Start Trek, etc. I
think an AXP for this would work and not be any harder to code than, say,
Bubbles.

Flying through stars would require a .AXP, not a .IXP. Actually, you can do
a Star Wars-like hyperspace effect by simply using RAIN.AXP (from the Yost IPAS
Boutique disk #4, "Particle Systems") with its bounding box rotated and
stretched out so that the camera is inside the bottom plane and pointing toward
the top plane! Make the particles tiny, with long tails, and assign a white
self-illuminating material to the bounding box, and voila! It works best with a
wide-angle FOV.

Yep, I thought so. <g>
Your Rain suggestion is nifty, I'll keep it in mind. I still would prefer the
elegance of a dedicated AXP for this. Actually, I don't do many "flying
through the stars" animations. It would be fun for rare cases which could use
the effect.

It's not exactly my suggestion. It's one of the examples of Things To Try
in the Yost IPAS Boutique #4 User's Manual. Works, too. 🙂
I think I'll start an IPAS/Plug-Ins Wish List thread, wherein any of us can
post ideas for Plug-Ins where developers such as Digimation, Schrieber, etc.
can see them.

Great tip – now occupying some space in the back portion of my mind.
thanks

Just get Gus to do a KPT Bryce IPAS! 🙂
