#Beveled Text
9 messages in this thread
I am trying to figure out how to bevel text in 3D studio. I have been forward
and backwards thru the manuals and have not been able to find anything that
would help me. The problem that I have is that the first level on the path
becomes distorted when I try to bevel. The 3D lofter gives me an error (of
course) when I try to make the beveled text so it is definetly a problem. I
have tried all sorts of things to get it to work, to no avail. Can anyone out
there help me?

tricky,tricky,tricky……
It took me a LOT of trial and error to get it to work using the bevel function
in the lofter. It's hard but it can work.
You should get the book "Inside 3D Studio" (New Riders Pub.)
there are a few other solutions….
1) there is a shareware prog. called FontStudio3D. it is in the 3D Studio Lib.
of this forum. (it does a pretty good standard bevel) you do have to register
it if you want to save vowels. It saves to DXF.
2) There is another 3D program called Imagine by Impulse Inc.
About $300 – $400 ( 1-800-328-0184)
It is no 3D Studio, but it is a powerful program in it's own right. I use it to
supplement 3D Studio. One of the things that Imagine does really well is bevel
text. (It also outputs DXF) as a matter of fact, since I got 3D Studio, text
beveling is the primary thing that I've been using Imagine for. (There are many
people that like Imagine better than any other 3D program, (no accounting for
taste…<g> )
Good luck

Also, please see my posts about Real 3D in TAKE 5 section, "Amazing B-Spline
Modeler". You can easily create beveled, chamfered, cut & grooved as well as
rounded edges for text object export to 3DS – along with the ton of other stuff
it offers.
The way to bevel text in 3DS is to use the create/outline tool in the shaper to
create the 2 required edges for each letter. The technique is detailed
thoroughly by Alan Iglesias in a 3D Artist article a year or two ago.

Hi Bruce,
->"I am trying to figure out how to bevel text in 3D studio."
I think the most common mistake I've seen people make when beveling text is
trying to create their bevel *inside* the outlines of their typeface character.
In otherwords, they create the bevel deformations using ranges less than 100%
up to 100% and back again. Check to make sure that you are scaling the bevel
values starting at 100% to a larger size and back to 100%.
Large interior bevels usually produces the "first level…distorted" effect you
are describing. Leave the "1st" level alone, and scale your bevel deformation %
larger.
If you absolutely must create an interior bevel, you need to select a typeface
with large stroke widths that have enough interior room to build the bevel.
Good luck,
-Heinz.

The way I found that works the best is to generate the bevel seperately. Take
your text outline from the Shaper into the Lofter.
1. Create the text in the Shaper. You can do individual letters or whole words.
2. Load text into the Lofter
I'll be sure to clip your pithy explanation and post it when others ask about
bevelling text – thanks. <g>

Oops, I didn't finish that message, saved it to finish later. I think Navigator
sent it anyway. Go ahead and delete it, the message wouldn't help much. Though
it was a good start. Someone posted the method I was going to suggest already.
Bruce,
If you still can't get it to work try the program called FontStudio3D in the
libs.
