Harry, Harry, Animator Studio wasn't designed to run in NT-even in its 16-bit shell mode. Sorry. Jh

Jerry, I was at your pre-release training in Chicago . . . I remember you saying that Animator Studio wasn't designed for "NT", but I don't remember if you said if there were any plans to do so in the future . . .

PMJI, but even if it isn't an NT app, SHOULDN'T you have made sure it would at least RUN under NT, considering that you're asking everyone to go to NT for 3DS? I mean, from what I understand, the plans for the move to the NT platform have been in place for quite a while. Are there plans to make it compatible in the near future? Thanks, Dave

Please tell us why Autodesk is not supporting NT with Animation Studio. Brandon

Well I would think that it would run under NT regardless of the mass. I do not want to jump to any negative conclusions and would like a a explanation regarding this. if it runs in 16 bit that ok as long as it runs. If not, why not. From what I understand not supporting NT by a windows app would have to be programmed to keep it from loading. Something I was not excepting from Autodesk. Brandon

Think about it for a minute, If Autocad is already running on NT and 3D Studio will be there around the first part of next year, doesn't it also make sense that you should EXPECT to see an NT version of Animator Studio to follow suit in time for the change-over? Appears to me that Autodesk is heading in this direction across the board. Lee

Hi Dave! I've been reading some messages about how AS won't run under Windows 95. Do you have any inside scoop on this? I find this _very_ hard to believe as it would be the _first_ program I've come across that won't run under W95. A "brand new" program that won't run under W95 while others that are (relatively) way-old run just fine? Nah… Tell me it ain't so! I just placed my order for it on Friday and if I can't run it (I'm W95 only now) I'll have to cancel the order 'cause I be darned if I'll pay for a program that I can't run, only to have to pay for yet-another-upgrade later just to run it for the _first_ time. Also, in an earlier message you referred to the intended market of Studio as the current "computer masses" [not a direct quote] but I would contend that a program that demands that amount of memory that AS does simply isn't a mass market product and never will be. So… What'd'ya think? (or dontcha?<g>) Ernie Jackson The Virtual Dimension BBS PCGnet 9:510/619 – Ernie Jackson, Written 14-May-1995 @ 23:12:36 Using: Windows NavCIS PRO 1.6

Nah… Tell me it ain't so! << it's so. but hey, this is it's first release. every program's debute starts out on some platform. if we look to every great program Autodesk has ever produced, they got their start on a single platform. as to the future of AStudio, no one can comment about any product's future, but with the increasing marketshare of Win95 and NT, it's pretty easy to see the writing on the wall. in my experience, Win95 and NT are still nothing in marketshare compared to Win3.1. it makes complete sense that the program was written for the "common man" first. i think many of us here forget how entrenched we are in technology compared to the rest of the nation, and i say this without any level of snobbery… the product caters to the majority at this time. keep in mind that it is not solely catered to the "traditional Autodesk customer" either. <g> >> I just placed my order for it on Friday and if I can't run it (I'm W95 only now) I'll have to cancel the order 'cause I be darned if I'll pay for a program that I can't run, only to have to pay for yet-another-upgrade later just to run it for the _first_ time. << no problem, ernie. i think of all software products that way. it is a wise strategy. no rush. if a version comes out for Win95 or NT, it will no doubt be built off the success of the Win3.1 version and you'll have even a better product. patience is its own reward! <g> look how many of us have been waiting for an NT version of 3D Studio! >> Also, in an earlier message you referred to the intended market of Studio as the current "computer masses" [not a direct quote] but I would contend that a program that demands that amount of memory that AS does simply isn't a mass market product and never will be. << perhaps AStudio is a prophet of things to come…a gearing up of the next step in hardware demands. (or dontcha?<g>) << i think AStudio is a great product for Windows 3.1. i think it has a bright future ahead of it, and it would not surprise me in the least to see a version which will run under NT in the future. i could be more specific though if i knew your zodiac sign. <LOL!> -dave

<< From what I understand not supporting NT by a windows app would have to be programmed to keep it from loading>> Actually, this is not true. The ability to run an application under Windows NT is more than just double clicking on the icon. How Windows NT handles the system, everything from display to multimedia drivers, differs signficantly over Windows 3.1. It involves much more than a re-compile to a 32-bit code. Dave is right about where this product is aimed. We wanted to make Animator Studio available to everybody who needs a good 2D paint and animation tool in Windows. Right now, that means Windows 3.1. Jh

Jeremy – <everybody who needs a good 2D paint and animation tool in Windows. Right now, that means Windows 3.1> Well, actually, 2-D animation software is a must for all of us 3-D folks. Since 3-DS will be on NT soon enough to be called "almost now", Autodesk's position with regard to Ani-Pro and Animator Studio is very crucial. Once I launch 3-DS in an NT session, I want to be able to multi-task to most of my critical apps. If Animator Studio is not going to be upgraded to NT, I would rather spend the time learning an 'at least as robust' package and thus eliminate yet another reason to dual boot. A definite catagory on my WISHLIST – have both Ani-Pro and Animator STudio running in NT (so much for a perfect virtual world). Jeffrey

Well dave, I will develop it for win32 and then I will be able to make it run both under Windows 3.1, Windows 95 and Windows NT. That way I will support the masses of business people and the masses of 3DS users who want to use the program under NT. Cool concept, uhn? 🙂 ana /krazy images

According to Mr. Jeremy Hubbel [Adesk], the initially shipping version of AAStudio will not run under NT, due to problems with the differences in MM handling between Win3.11 and NT. And, of course, there will be no comments forthcoming from Adesk about whether they intend to make an NT compatible version. However, it seems reasonable to assume that they will. What doesn't seem AS reasonable, though, is that they expect you to jump back and forth between two operating systems (ie re-boot) in order to go from using 3DS to AAS and back — though that'll be the case for those continuing to use AAP, anyway… so why am I griping? I guess because it seems that in a cohesive strategy, one would want all new products to be able to mesh (no pun intended) with the least possible effort, and while one would expect difficulties with continuing to use older apps, that shouldn't be the case with new ones. David, The incompatibility of Animaton Studio with NT is very frustrating. Autodesk has known about this for some time and the only thing that I can think of is that they had their hands full getting it running at all. Some people are suggesting that Autodesk is 'of course' coming out with an NT version. I'm not convinced. I was always confident that we would see 3DS go NT, but if people want an NT version of Animaton Studio then __SHOUT_REAL_LOUD___! A more professional 2D animation package under NT with multiple floating objects etc would only make sense and someone is going to do it. I hope it will be Autodesk. -Paul

>>We have just ordered the software, are you saying it does not run under NT?<< I just received my copy of Animator Studio today. I run NT 3.51. It DOES NOT run under NT. In fact it hangs the system. I called tech support and they told me that it will not run under NT. I asked what my options were and they said run it under Windows 3.1 or return the product. Randy

Why would AutoDesk develop a Windows app that will not run under NT? I can understand that it may not be a native NT app but why not allow it to run under NT (or Windows 95…So, far)? Thanks, Randy

"Why would AutoDesk develop a Windows app that will not run under NT?" I would guess that it wasn't Autodesk's intent to NOT do an NT version. My guess would be that a Windows port was easier or quicker, and that hopefully an NT version would come from the feedback we're getting with the Windows Version AAStudio. I know that the product manager (Mark Gerhard) sees the comments about AAStudio. Thanks.

Nik, In retrospect, I do think people should have a significant block of time in order to switch from WfWG/etc. to NT. (many have already started) Purchasing a valuable new program that is yet another stop sign for the "journey" to NT is frustrating. People want to change at their leisure, not following ADESK's official (yet unnanounced, of course) plan to get get everything over to NT by [insert date/major event here]. People are sick of Dos, and sick of Windows. They want to get to a rich, stable environment as soon as possible, and they (we) rely on more than just a couple programs for productivity. (I have ER, and PP/NT in my hot hands, ready for NT.) But all said and soapbox returned, I understand if it was easier to write "quick and dirty" for WfWG/etc and tweak things for NT later. Better AAStudio in the hand, than NT AAS in the bush. -just make sure NT AAS is really NT tweaked. 😉 JNJ

You know because 3DS is comming out for NT I will not buy anything anymore that doesn't run under NT… I am very disapointed. 🙁 I think Autodesk really needs to sit down and think things out.
