#CDROM DRIVE CLEANING

I HAVE NEC 84 CDROM DRIVE WITH PROAUDIO SPECTRUM 16 SOUND BOARD. LATELY I
HAVE EXPERIENCED SKIPPING OR GAPS IN SOUND ESPECIALLY IN WINDOWS WITH
MUSICAL CDROM DISCS. I HAVE CHECKED ALL HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE. THERE IS
NO APPARENT CONFLICT IN EITHER JUMPER SETTINGS OR PROGRAM IRQ.
WHAT'S MY PROBLEM ? HOW DO I DETERMINE IF CDROM DRIVE IS MISALIGNED OR
NEEDS CLEANING ANED IF EITHER, HOW DO I REPAIR ? IF NEITHER, THEN WHAT
MIGHT BE WRONG ? I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY ADVICE. THANKS.

James I know this is probably a stupid question but have you cleaned the
discs themselves. If they are dirty or damaged they will do that, the
smallest nick will cause a skip. Other then that, if this is a new problem
and you've had this drive for awhile now. Your lasers may be out of
alignment, then you need a tech to fix it.

James, please type in upper and lower case. All upper case is taken as
shouting on CIS and is harder to read. The skipping is probably not your
CD-ROM drive. To see if the skipping is caused by your drive play an
ordinary audio CD. If that plays OK the problem lies elsewhere. What is
the type and clock speed of your microprocessor? What is on your MSCDEX
line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file? What versions of software are you using
for MSCDEX, TSLCDR and PROAUDIO? The latest drivers are available on the
Media Vision support forum. GO MEDIAVISION to get there.

Jim, you should have MSCDEX.EXE, Ver. 2.21. Mine is 25431 bytes and is
dated 2/4/92. The program, MSD, will tell you the version. Also, your
problem may be caused by Smartdrv. If you have it installed, type SMARTDRV
C- to stop caching of your C drive and see what happens. Jim
