Dollar bill map
25 messages in this thread
Does anyone know where I can get a good image of a U.S. dollar bill to be used
as a texture map? Also, where might I be able to find a book of corporate
logos? I know of one at a place called the "Bookstop" in San Antonio TX, but I
am in Eugene Oregon, and I don't know of a "Bookstop" here. Thanks.

James:
I am not sure if it is legal, but you could scan a dollar bill. Probably the
Treasury department would frown on it. You could always composite Frank Zappas
image over Georges though………
How is Spencers Butte these days? How about Cougar Hot Springs up the McKenzie?
Email me if you need the scan desparately.

I've yet to try either. We're about to purchase a recreation vehicle though,
so those are now on our list!

Not desperately, just would like to find one. I don't have a scanner, any
ideas as to what kind of scanner I should look for? Thanks.

James,
I went to school in Eugene, and grew up in Roseburg. I miss Oregon this time
every year. Spencers Butte is that big Rock at the end of Willamette street
downtown. As college kids, we used to go up there and do the things that kids
do. I am taking my family on Vacation in Oregon next month. Hope it doesn't
rain!!
I own an HP IIcx flatbed scanner that works great. I recently acquired a IIIc
for a friend, it has replaced the IIcx. HP seems to be a very reliable and
consistent product.
I will do the scan for you if you need it. Depending on the size/resolution you
require, I could send you a disk, or drop in your mailbox.
Let me know,
Mike
Hi Mike,
hmm, talking about flatbeds,
I'm curious, you said you upgraded your scanner, I'm in Montreal, and here HP
has brought out a brand new fladbed scanner called the ScanJet 3c, it came out
on April 20, 1995. In their press release, they say this has replaced the II
series. Does your scanner scan at 600 dpi OPTICAL resolution ? The reason I'm
wondering, is that this new one scans at 600 dpi, and is 1495$ here.
I am really looking for a flatbed scanner, and many people have told me to do
really decent scans that you need a 600 dpi optical scanner, not one that scans
at 300 dpi (optical), perhaps you could help me out, how are the scans you do,
when you can say .. a picture from a catalogue, or magazine does your machine
do a scan pretty much the quality of the original ? I'm very curious, I'm also
wondering, when you see jpgs or gifs of calender girls, motorbikes, boats, etc,
how come they are about 500k for about a 1024×768 image ?, I few other users
here on Compuserve had told me that an image scanned at 600 dpi, that size
would be 5 megs!, hmm, I'm pretty lost. I find the quality of these gifs quite
good, you don't see any imperfections in the image, and they are super crisp.
Anyway, any info you can give me I would really appreciate.
thanks for taking the time to read this.

<< many people have told me to do really decent scans that you need a 600 dpi
optical scanner,>>
It would depend on the size of the source material you were scanning. To me the
main thing is how many pixels are involved. Unless you are ending up with a
printed output, dpi is not the most important factor . An image with a given
number of pixels can be converted to various dpi levels in photoshop but the
ammount of information will be the same. Therefore a 300 dpi scanner of equal
image quality to a 600 dpi scanner should be able to scan a 4" sq source image
with the same ammount of detail and quality as the 600 dpi scanner would do
with a 2" square source image. This is without taking into account the printing
dots that are present in magazine photos that cause problems when scanning
small images.
Since files of images scanned at less than 300 dpi can be larger than is
necessary for use in 3ds textures, especially for video work( If a map will
only take up one third of a 750 pixel wide video image then anything over 250
pixels is overkill.), a 300dpi scanner should be sufficient for stuff that will
be for video output. If you do film work or still print work that would end up
in output that is measured in 1000s of pixels rather than 100s of pixels then a
600 dpi scanner would be a good idea.
GIFs have limited color palettes and JPEGS are compressed so they are smaller
files.
Pardon me if Im telling you things you already know but you mentioned your
confusion.
Hope this helps

That's a funny one. Let's see, hmmm, if I place this dollar bill up to the
monitor, hmm, maybe if I press a little harder.. <CRACK!> Uhmmmm, I don't
think that's gonna' work too well. Thanks for the suggestion though 🙂
What I was wanting to know is where I can find a good image already captured.
I don't have a scanner.
-James Franssen
Er, um, well James, ah, due to the nature of the paper on which, um, currency
is printed, it, ah, is partially destroyed by the scanner light, sooo, I'll do
it for you, but you'll, er, have to provide me with more than one dollar bill
to make the scan, er-ah, work — probably 1,000 or so, ought to do it…. <g>
(Then I run out to BestBuy and grab a new HP ScanJet IIIc, which would make
your bills disappear "poof", take it home, scan in a bill, and, viola!)
Dave
It seems, uhm er ah eh, the straight forward, uhm er ah, help is getting, er,
harder and harder, uh, to find.
My only gripe about coming on this forum and asking a question, is that some
people only like to give partial replies. I think I could have figured out that
I could get a dollar bill image from a dollar bill. Is it really that hard to
understand what I was asking?

Ummm…Excuse me, I didn't understand that question. Could you
Please rephrase that in the form of an Answer?
Thank You. <BG>

Hi James,
if I had a good scanner I could would scan a bill for you, … here is another
way to do it. The other day I bought a new product called SNAPPY, this is a
video grabber that graps video stills and you can use them as materials, just
plain snapshots of your family photos, grab images from the t.v. vhs machine,
video disk player, etc. I paid 299$ here in Montreal, the product has been out
here for about 3 weeks only and is brand spankin' new. The beauty of this
product is … you just plug it in to your parallel (printer) port, and that is
it!, no need to install an actual card in your computer, 2 seconds to plug it
in, about 2 minutes to install 1 diskette for windows to run the software, and
there is a morph program and an image program called Fauve Matise that comes
with it. Amazing little product. It was listed by 2 magasines at the best new
product of 1995. It captures :
16.8 million colours at a maximum resolution of 1500×1125 !!!
this is the first and only video capture device that has been able to do this.
all others capture at 640×480 resoluton.
You have all kinds of neat features in the Snappy software,
input options:
TV/VHS input
LIVE VIDEO CAMERA SOURCE
MOVING VIDEO
STILL VIDEO
HIGHER QUALITY VIDEO STILL
HIGHEST VIDEO QUALITY STILL – 1500X1125
You have the choice of scanning at :
320×200
640×480
1500×1225
all in 16.8 million colours.
Anyway, for anyone interested here is more info:

I'm pretty amazed at the quality of the snaps I've been making, and I'll send a
few up, and I'll do a scan with my junky little handheld scanner of a 2 dollar
bill, as here in Canada, the 1 dollar doesn't exist any more, we have a neat
little dollar coin called a "loony" as you know we Canadians are a little loony
haha.
ok, bye for now
Mark in Montreal.
Hi David,
ahh, you know about the new HP ScanJet 3C, I just saw this a few weeks ago,
there was a press release about it, and it looks like a pretty amazing piece of
equipment, supposedly this is the best colour they have ever brought out, and
it also scans at 600 dpi (optical), I am so curious to see how a flatbed
scanner that scans at 300 dpi optical scans. Do you have access to a scanner ?
if so could you do a scan of an American stamp, at the highest quality, and
send it to the forum ? … or anyone else reading this, everyone tells me to do
quality scans you should have a 600 dpi scanner, but I still curious what a 300
dpi scanner scans are like or even a small sample of a scan with a 600 dpi
scanner.
Anyway, thanks very much,
Mark Schneider.
Mark:
UNfortuneately, all I've got direct access to is a crummy little hand-scanner.
I just don't have a need that I could defend strongly enough if the boss were
to say, "And we needed to spend $1000 on this thing BECAUSE…?" — <g>
I too have heard some really good rumours re the IIIc. One day, perhaps.
Dave
Hi David,
I understand what you mean, it is funny, I would go out and spend money on a
scanner even if is just for personal fun. I once had the experience of buying
something really bad, (stereo amp for my car), the money I paid wasn't much,
and the amp sucked big time, I was fortunate enough to take it back, and bought
a top of the line Denon amp at 1500$, I love music, and this sounds amazing.
The thing is that you get what you pay for… I'm now very weiry of buying an
article that is half the price of other article that is supposed to do the same
thing. I see some scanners at 899$, then some at 1499$, but again you get what
you pay for. It is all a matter of money though. Yeah, with times today, nobody
feels very secure here anymore, in Canada anyway, they say the employment
situation is getting better here, but most people don't see it happening, so
everyone is watching their pennies more closely. For scanners, there is now a
new model that takes over where the IIIc left off, the HP ScanJet 3c, this is a
beautiful piece of machinery, if you ever see it, you won't want to go home
without it!,
oh well, c'est la vie,
take care,
Mark in Mtl.
Sorry, I just assumed you had a scanner.
Ed
Hi James,
geez, you don't have a scanner eh ?
I myself am looking for a flatbed scanner.
Right now I have a colour handheld scanner that I got here in
Montreal for 199$, it works pretty well, but could not be used for quality
work. I do scans of family photos, etc,
anyway, once you get hooked, you'll never be able be able to work without one,
they are pretty fun to use, and are really an essential tool. The possibilities
are endless!
Mark in Montreal.
>> geez, you don't have a scanner eh ? <<
No, but we do have a Canon L1 Hi8 video camera and that is what I've been
using to bring in images to use as texture maps, but I tried to grab a dollar
bill from the camera and the colors just weren't right, I don't have to correct
lighting set up yet, also, I got a lot of video lines, so the image just wasn't
clear enough.
-James Franssen
I've sent a dollar bill scan, check it out
Mark.
The actual real scan was 2 megs big! ahh.
Hi again James,
perhaps one of the users could upload a scan of a dollar bill, I would be
interested to see the quality of a scan, with a flatbed scanner.
Concerning legality, … I know actually printing a PHYSICAL dollar bill, that
is: a hardcopy of it, is illegal here in Canada, but as to just scanning it for
use on the computer screen this is something else, I've seen a lot of scanned
bills in .pcx form on many bbs, but they were in black and white, and pretty
bad quality. (More like a pretty badly photocopied image).
Good luck.
Mark in Montreal.
James:
For the logos you could try the CD-Rom collection from Impresiv. They have at
least a volume I and II which include about a hundred logos from major
companies and institutions.
Bob
>> For the logos you could try the CD-Rom collection from Impresiv <<
Could these logo's be saved as individual images and used as a background in
3D Studio? How might I get the address for Impresiv? Thanks.
-James Franssen
Jim:
The logos on the CD's are stored in both bitmap and vector format. I don't
have Impresiv's address handy, sorry.

Hi James,
geez, I'm going to check my wallet, I think I actually have an American dollar
bill! Just checked … and I do have have a 1 $ bill as well as a $5
ok, I'll scan them, and it the sysops think it is ok, you'll probabally see
them on monday, as I don't think the forums are updated over the week-end.
anyway let me know what you think of the scans.
bye for now

geez jus out on the balcony, everybody and their brother are out, really nice,
