#AMIGA REBORN
7 messages in this thread
I HEARD FROM AN AMIGA TECH THIS WEEK THAT AMIGA HAS BEEN SOLD TO THE FORMER
GERMAN DISTRIB OF SAME, WHO WILL TAKE OVER ALL OPS INCLUDING THE U.K. I HOPE
I'M NOT GUILTY OF SPREADING ANOTHER RUMOR. HAS ANYONE ELSE HEARD ABOUT THIS?
Don't yell – we can hear you and, yes, it's been plastered all over this forum
for many weeks now (although I didn't read anything about ESCOM ever having
distributed Amigas). Way beyond rumor into fact. Thanks for the input.

Yes, Escom did actually sell Amigas in their stores several years ago. This is
a little known fact, but it's not like they are totally new to the Amiga. They
did sell them, although I am not sure that they were the (exclusive) German
distributor, I believe they just sold them, like any other computer.
What some people don't know is that Escom has had their eyes on the Amiga for a
lot longer than we think, it was no last minute decision. I believe they
planned on attending the auction as of about last July, and in other
interesting news, it is well known that several ex-Commodore employees work
there already, not ones who left C= recently, but people who worked their years
ago.
I think Escom knows what they are doing, because they are so quiet about their
exact plan before they do it. Mouthing off about what you are planning before
you have it figured out is not good business strategy. If other companies had
taken notice that Escom was about ready to explode (in growth, by getting C=
and Rumbelows) maybe someone else would have realized the Amiga may really be a
threat to the PC market if in the right hands (and maybe the right continent.
I don't see an Amiga in every house in the US, but in Germany someday…
maybe.)
A threat to the PC market? Not. Not in the near future, anyway. Hopefully it
can cooexist, but the time has passed for it to be a threat all by itself.

There has never been an exclusive distributor for the Amiga in Germany. Escom
sold it, department stores did, even toy shops, and there were/are mail order
houses and single dealers not connected to any chain as well (the latter is
where I've got mine from <g>).
Unfortunately, only those knew about the Amiga who read computer magazines,
back in 1986/86. There has been almost no advertising from C=. When I wanted to
buy my first A500 I had some difficulties to find where to. Yellow pages gave
no clue. It has been sheer coincidence that I found some addresses for my town
in an electronic information system. Otherwise I would have ended up with a Mac
or a clone <g>.

It does seem that they were craftier about the process then those hot-air
nincompoops claiming they had the deal in the bag and would ship Amigas a week
after closing. As I've read here so many times recently, I also just hope they
treat the Amiga right. It's certainly a machine that deserves respect and
could still offer cost-effective solutions if developed and marketed properly.

<dodgin' the potholes on the ISH>
Richard,
The Amiga tech, along with the Commodore logo and other intellectual
property were all sold to Escom (who are no the former distributer of C=
products). Escom has said that they plan on continuing Amiga distribution and
development.
BTW, typing in all caps is considered yelling when done online. No need to
"yell" here, we can "hear" you just fine. (grin)
