Ok..I neeed help here.. I have an AMiga 4000 set up with a total of 10 megs..( I think..how do I find out) It is also Toaterized… Now I want to add RAM so I can run Alpha PAint….(need at least 12)..how is this done? Can I buy standard SIMMs ram or is it something special for AMIGA?…and what is my benefit for more RAM? Is Simms the same as for PC?..and so,,,what should I expect to pay?..can I install it?

Al, >Ok..I neeed help here.. I have an AMiga 4000 set up with a total of 10 megs..( I think..how do I find out) If you type 'avail' (no quotes) on a shell line and hit return it should tell you how much memory you've got installed. Note that you are using some to run your system but it should be pretty easy to figure out (round up) how much memory your system holds. >Can I buy standard SIMMs ram or is it something special for AMIGA?…and what is my benefit for more RAM? I'm not sure what configuration the 4000 needs but unless you've got a GVP card installed (which requires special memory chips) you can use the chips from various sources as long as they are the right ones for your system (Sims, zips, whatever). More memory will give you a snappier system in general and allow you to load and work with larger graphics (or sound) files without problems. A good rule of thumb is you can never have too much memory 🙂 Skimming through the Redwoods on AutoPilot Asha

Hi Al – When the Amiga WorkBench screen is up, like just after booting, click on the screen with the left mouse button. At the top of the screen you will see numbers associated with "graphics mem" and "other mem". The graphics mem is the chip ram (should be about 2 megabyts) and the other is fast (10 megabytes if you're right). You can add two 4 Megabyte standard simms (check your manual for exact specs) to the two open memory slots, or just one. When you turn your computer back on, the memory will be added. The first benefit from more RAM is being able to run AlphaPaint. And, of course, you can have TPaint and CG running together. With 8 more megs, you could also have LightWave. Those chips are going for less than $200. Shop around. Hank Videology, Inc Where you always get P.O.M.P. and Service under all circumstances

Hi Al – You should already have 2MB of Chip ram, and that is the maximum for an Amiga 4000. But the fast ram, which can go to 16MB on a stock Amiga 4000/040/25, can be expanded with 4MB simms to that point. Check the specs in your manual regarding the simm's specifications. Or open the A4000 and get the part number from a simm. Good luck ! Hank PS – Naturally, we can get them for you if you'd like. That's less than $200 per simm, of 4MB. Haven't heard anything yet about the GIGA chip. Any Details? Hank Videology, Inc Where you always get P.O.M.P. and Service under all circumstances
