I Just bought an older 3000 and am trying to install WB 2.04. But it won't even
boot from floppy 2.04. I have the original WBench stuff and it came with a
kickstart disk. Not even my 500 uses one of these. Can I update the rom, or is
it perhaps a zorro autoconfig board I need?

You will need the 2.04 Kickstart ROM to use 2.04 Workbench. At this point,
though, it would probably be better to get 3.1 instead, since it is newer and
better.
The kickstart disk you have was not intended for general use. Those were made
only for developers, who would know how to install and use them.

I suspect it was a developer's machine. My best advice would be to upgrade
all the way to OS 3.1 (with the ROMS). There are several places where it
should be available (mail order, at least). Good luck!

What is a developers macheine and how is it different than a stock critter?
It apparently was designed as a point of sale macheine for sales people to
demonstrate to potential customers.
It has some kind edition of 2.0 that must have been the first release of 2.0
(36.xx) I want to upgrade the OS to at least 2.1 if not 3.x. How do I go About
it? is it a chip swap or a software kind of thing?
I have a floppy of WBench 2.04 but the computer won't boot from it, gets as
far as the DOS screen then gurus with a software failure notice.
Is the 3000 OS stored by the computer different than a 500?
I'm real good at taking these apart without damaging them so let me know what

The first 3000's "kickstarted" from a file on the hard disk. To set that
up, you needed the "Super Kickstart" disk that came with the 3000. The
install utility on the matching WB disk put the Kickstart image out onto
the hard drive where the ROMS in the machine would find them. (You're
right about the ROMS being an early version of 2.0… it was just enough
to boot in the kickstart from the HD.) Best bet would be to go all the
way to 3.1. It's a ROM swap, you can get the new ROMS from a dealer (if
you can find one) or mail order. Then it's just a matter of replacing
those early 2.0 ROMS with the new ones, and reloading the HD. BTW, make
sure you get the 3000 version of the ROMS.

What I meant was, perhaps the person who had that machine before was using
it to develope software or hardware on and had a "kickstart" disk so that
he/she could test their products with various beta versions of the OS.

There were also early models of the 3000 that had the kickstart ROMs as a
file on the workbench. I'd never really heard of one that had it on disk
before.

Both. I'd stronly suggest getting 3.X. You will need to install (or have
someone else do it) the 3.1 ROM and then install the software.

As I said above, some 3000's have their ROM image on the harddrive and boot
from that. Others have installed the ROMs. The ROMs for the 3000 are
different (there are two I think) than those for the 500. The OS (software
part) is stored in a similar manner on all Amigas (in sys:)
