#Scanner HELP!!!!!!
21 messages in this thread
Well, I guess it's time to ask here. I'm having a hell-of-a time getting a
Migraph Scanner to run with a 2000. I've tried everything and the sw for the
scanner will not load. I keep getting a "unexpected scsi.device status error".
I'm using a 4.6 mother board, a GVP combo accelerator and scsi controller and a
Quantum 1080S 1-Gig HD. I have tried every conceivable combination of
termination on the HD and am at my wits end with this thing. Can anyone help
me?
C. Davey
Hi C,
There was a terminator included with your scanner, or there shound have been.
Plug it into the empty scsi port on your scanner, let your hard drive know it
is no longer the last device (last lun/last disk) and you should be scanning
away in no time. If none of this works, Migraph has more than adequate tech
support.

Oh yeah, I didn't mention the obvious terminations on the scanner end. But
yes, that has also been tried in every concievable combination. Same result.
I have spent hours on the phone with Migraph, who decided it was a GVP problem
and with GVP, right up 'til their last week of life, getting excellent support
but no answers. I have availed myself of Quantum's "FAX On Demand" customer
service and if you wnat to talk SERVICE man, THEY are happening! No solution.
I'm beginning to think it is a hardware problem related to my very early
mother-board (4.2 upgraded to 4.5, I think), but don't really want to buy
another computer if I don't have to to get this going. I need to know if
anyone has gotten a Migraph 2400 to work with a GVP Combo accelerator/scsi
controller with a Quantum 1080S on a 2000 w/4.5 mother board.
C. Davey
Sorry you're having this problem C.
I have my Migraph hooked up to an A2000 w/GVP 33mhz '040 and 1.7 gig Micropolis
drive. I was having the same problem you're having until my scanner was made
the last device (I have a tape backup system in the scsi chain also). Oh, BTW
how long are your scsi cables? I had to shorten my cables and rearrange my
gear to enable my to use 3ft cables between each scsi device. Hope this helps.
Oh yes, my motherboard is a 6.2 rev.

>I was having the same problem you're having until my scanner was made the

All I have is the HD, mounted on the GVP board and the scanner. The cable is
the one that comes with the scanner. There are no others. It's only about a 3
or 4 foot cable.
Do you mean that you were having the problem of not being able to load the sw
for the scanner because of this "unexpected gvpscsi.device status" error? I'm
beginning to think that it's an incompatability between either the mother board
or the operating system. I'm using 3.1 OS, what do you have?
Well, at least it does some good to talk to someone who has been successful in
getting this stuff to all work together. Thanks.
C. Davey
C,
There is one thing that I left out, turn on the scanner first and let it go all
the way through its initialization (until both lights, POWER and READY come on
and stay on) then and only then, turn on the computer.
I am also using OS 3.1

Yup, that's been SOP from the beginning.
One thing, however. You do have this scanner working with OS 3.1, is that
correct? If so, that elliminates the possiblity of an incompatability between
the two. I have also elliminated the possibility of an incompatability with
mother board revision 4.2 so that's good. We're getting warm here.
What SW did you use to prep your HD?
.
C. Davey
Yes, I am running 3.1, from an A2000 with GVP 33MHz '040.
GVP Faastprep, version 2.02 was used to prep the drive.
If you think it might help, my phone # is 312 238-9726

ALMOST the same configuration as my set-up. You are my key to solving this
problem. You used Faaastprep, not Expertprep to prep the drive. That's a
differance. I used Expertprep. I am off to NY in a few days but may be
calling you when I get back next week. Have to solve a problem on the HD that
I created a few days ago first. Then I'll get back to it. I *will* get this
thing working. Thanks for the offer of help and the phone number!

No problem C,
I just hope I can be of assistance. The best time to reach me is between
5:00 and 8:00 P.M. central standard time. Incidently, I also used ExpertPrep,
I misspoke when I said Faaastprep.

Aha! Ok, when you used Expertprep did you have the "Last Drive" switch checked
or not?

Hi, Norman!
C.Davey replied to my message regarding the same basic problem: Migraph w/
GVP product. I have a GVP HD8, looking at GVP's docs where they refer to the
terminating bus, they show a drawing of the resistor pack. Opening up the HD,
I saw two such packs, yellow, but they appear to be soldered in, I will have to
re-check, though. As C. Davey said, GVP tech support leaves a LOT to be
desired. Migraph said it was the HD, as the "chain" is terminating there. W/o
the Terminating block SCSITest doesn't see anything beyond the HD, with the
Term Block I get the same cryptic message from the sys as C.Davey.

Lou,
There should be either two or three very thin, long (about 1 inch)
terminators on your drive they should be right above your scsi I/O port on the
drive, side by side (lengthwise). If these yellow things things you saw were
indeed soldered in, they are not terminating resistors.
One thing I neglected to mention to C, was to let the scanner go completely
through its initialization (until both the POWER and READY lights are on
steadily) before you turn on the computer.

Hi, Norm:
I just checked by the I/O port ( forgive my ignorance, but that's the one
which plugs into the side of the Amiga?). There is nothing which resembles
what you describe, anywhere. I have four simms, could it be under these?
though I doubt there's room.
As to the scanner, I did wait until all the lights stopped flashing. I do
appreciate any help you can render as GVP is not too fast on getting back to
one.
One GVP dealer said that there may not be a term block in the HD8+, I don't
know. Although after looking around the uncovered HD the only open areas
besides the SIMM pins, are two rows of pins near the I/O port (assuming the
above definition is right), but this wouldn't accomadate (sp) an inch long term
block.

Louis,
The terminating resistors are on your hard drive, not on your HD8 (I don't
know anything about your HD8.) the resistors should be above the 50 pin scsi
connection on your hard drive. Look on top of your hard drive, right above the
scsi port on the back of the hard drive. Please excuse the number of times I
said hard drive, but I don't want to be responsible for your (or anyone else)
misunderstanding me.
My phone number is 312 238-9726, if this might be useful.

Thanks Norman!
Much to my chagrin I've decided to returm the scanner to the vendor. Rather
than run the risk of ending up with an expensive dust catcher. I appreciate
your help.

No problem, wish I could have helped.

So do I. Thanks.

Louis,
What make Hard Drive is it?
.
C. Davey
It's a GVP, although I forget the make of the actual HD. I decided to
return the scanner, I didn't want to risk ending up with a useless device, and
be out the cash. it is unfortunate, I had such plans :). It's a pity, GVP's
"tech support" sucks.

Sorry to hear you gave up on this. Now what do I do?
