#D/Vision pro vs. Premier

I don't know anything about writing software..So I don't understand
how these two programs can be (apparently) simular, and yet a $3000
difference. I need to do offline editing and use the edl to auto
assemble on line at the post house I use. Cineworks for $900 has all
the cutting features but with out edl, it's useless. to upgrade to
D/V pro is 3 grand more. Yet the Adobe premier lit says edl and all
for..what was it …500 …700 bucks? What's wrong with it, or is
D/Vision just over priced.
DVision works with a pretty good capture board which you can cut a
rough draft of. It also renders (creates transitions and wipes) very
quickly. But it is basically an enviornment thats market share is
getting smaller all the time due to programs like Preimiere. I think
DVision Pro is overpriced but others might disagree saying the
working enviornment and speed makes it easier to work with.

You're right there. Why pay $80,000 for AVID Media Composer software (yes a
small percentage of that is hardware, but the point remains valid) when you can
buy Premiere for $800? The answer is the work environment. If your an editor
making a living with an editing product, time and facility is everything. The
ability to make cuts VERY fast, trim edits easily, have good audio control, use
keyboard shortcuts, see your clips quickly, not wait to make a movie, and to
have you main tools all in the right place where you expect them is probably
worth the money. AVID seems to be doing pretty well.
That is not at all to say that Premiere doesn't give you a whole lot of good
stuff. It's an excellent product and is probably the right product if those
differences in work environment aren't important . D-Vision, AVID, Data
Translation, or others also have good products for different users. It is
cliche to talk about Hondas, Chevys, Ferraris, and Mercedez, but it is true
that they serve different needs.

Thanks for the response. I have worked with a "big guns' system at the
post house I use. The Lightworks system. Of course now I never want
to go back to the old way. Lightworks is an incredibly over priced
turnkey system on the pc. What even makes their pc worth so much?
Well like you say, what multi million dollar facility is going to
waste time looking for a bargain. "It's the most expensive, so it
must be the best. And that's what our customers expext to see." There
prices are also based on the fact they don't sell one everyday.
Which doesn't make sense as the kind of people that buy them are born
every minute. (a joke)
So for my puposes, I'm just conserned with putting out a bullet proof
EDL and a fairly decent output to tape to show rough drafts. Say 3/4
in. quality. If you think Priemier will give me that, than that's
what I'll get.

I take it you work with Premier than? Have you used the EDL to conform an
online D-2 session. That's my main consurn. That and having a good output to
tape for showing ough drafts to my associates.
