Need info from the "ground up" on photo-pc technology.
We have a MS Access database of college students. We'd like to add a
decent quality photo of each kid to his record (updated each year).
We'd like, then, to use that photo in the campus locator, the kid's
ID card(s), and on his national exam records, whatever.
What do you suggest for photo equipment and software to get a guy's
picture into a form that I can save it in an Access database? Will a
common VCR camera do it? Do the little gold-ball-on-a-gooseneck
cameras do any good? What do you recommend?
I understand I can print a pretty good photo (wallet size for an id
card) with just a 1200 dpi printer, right? Is that all I need on the
output side? What do you recommend? What if we want color?
We can afford "a few grand" for the add ons.

A Video Capture device like "Snappy" from Play, Inc. or the Movie
Machine from Fast Electronics would allow you to "snap" a picture
from a video source like a camcorder and then save the result into a
file. This file could then be accessed by various programs,
including databases, that support image files.
One of the neatest printers on the market for color output is the
Fargo Primera (Pro). They even have an option that will print onto a
"ID" card directly. I think the whole ID card setup is about $3.5K.
The Video Capture devices listed above run $200-500.
