I agree with John Jordan that tape is still the format for weddings,
and I disagree with John Small–non-linear is not practical for such
a lengthy productions.
Ok, for lengthy productions, especially where best quaility is desired
I cede this issue. In fact, you've read from another note that I'm
actually starting out linear. There are some here that have choosen
to go with the Miro DC1 in a NLE only setup and are satisified with
the results. They report something only slightly short of hi band
output.

That's certainly another reason for putting the when sometime this summer.
E-IDE hard drives should get bigger and less expensive. Putting these on a
PCI mobo makes more economic sense than a SCSI with not-inexpensive host
adapter … unless scsi is already needed for other peripherals.
PCI mobos will also come down in price due to intense competition from Cyrix
and other i586 clone chips. Byte just had an interesting article on this
issue. And the builder I obtain most of my parts from confirmed this with
his anticipation of price cuts at this level. I only wish the memory prices
would drop too. I keep thinking of our precious government's market
intervention two years ago and how this is probably keeping DRAM prices up
at our expense (I've always got a conspiracy theory or two handy).

Geez–next to what it used to cost, I figure $50/meg DRAM ain't bad!

I recall at one point 4mb was getting down to about $125 or so. That's when
market intervention occurred.

Actually, what happened about two years ago was that a big chip mfgr.
in Japan's factory had a big fire, so there was a six-eight month
period where we had a memory chip famine which drove the prices up.
Now, maybe they're *staying* higher than they should have been
otherwise now that the factory's up and running full-speed again, but
I suspect that's less govt. intervention (though being it's Japan,
I'm sure that's also a factor) than the companies selling the chips
wanting to keep the prices higher so they're not exactly *giving* the
chips away…

Further to that–I happened by The Wiz (a NYC area electronics store)
the other day and saw 850 meg Enhanced IDE hard drives on sale for
$299… Too bad I *insisted* on SCSI when I bought my DOS computer,
ain't it? (Can you say "Hello? Mo-ron?!") ;-/
$299 for 850 MB? Does this place sell mail order? I haven't heard of

PMJI here, but have you looked at what combines the best of both worlds and
allows you an upgrade path to work with. I am talking about Fast Video Machine
and its Hybrid (non-linear and linear) editing system. Long takes can be
digitized at a low quality. You can then edit in the non-linear world (i.e.
real time – no waiting on tapes to que) When your done use the EDL created and
pop in the origional tapes and let the machine do the editing from the master
tapes. For shorter takes you can digitize in Betacam SP quality and have 8 DAT
audio tracks to play with. This setup is really great. If anyone want to know

Interesting … what is needed to do this? The full VM and a DP/R? What
would a setup typically cost, roughly? I eliminated this from consideration
due to cost but maybe I was premature?

The VM "lite" version can be purchased for $2500 and is a stand alone unit.
To upgrade to Non-linear – The single channel DP/R is $5750 A/X rolls – Full
A/B rolls are posible with the two channel DP/R and is only slightly higher
$6995. The output is top-notch!
