Hi, While we're on the subject of sound, has anyone had the problem of frequent pauses of a few seconds in the sound when playing AVI's ? If so, did you fix it and how ? I'm trying to add sound to my TS animations using ATI's MediaMerge but when I play them, the sound cuts in and out. But it's not just my anims, I have the Jumpstart CD (Vfw 1.1e) and the included animation catalogue CD also produces these delays (some videos are worse than others). I just can't figure out the problem (I've tried many things like copying the videos to a RAM drive, updating my sound card drivers, etc). When the sound works, it works fine but many times the sound will stop and the video slows down. Any ideas ? Thanks, Shane. ps. I have a 486-33, 24 megs RAM, ATI mach64, SB 16 ASP…

Shane, I spent many months tracking this problem down with the SB 16s… I actually had to downgrade various drivers to get rid of the problem. Check the dates of your SB16 drivers with these below, and let me know if you have newer. I have had many problems with the newer drivers from Creative Labs… sb16aux.drv 8/14/94 sb16fm.drv 6/8/94 sb16snd 8/3/94 all wflt00xx.dlls 12/6/93 all wfm00xx.acv's 7/11/94 Also, make sure you have "Skip Frames if Behind" checked under Device, Configure in Media Player. Regards, Ian

Hi Ian, >> I spent many months tracking this problem down with the SB 16s… I actually had to downgrade various drivers to get rid of the problem. Ok, I'll look into this. >> Check the dates of your SB16 drivers… Well, up until a few days ago, they were very old (v. 1.0 ?). CLabs told me to upgrade to the newest ones so I did. But I couldn't perceive any differences… >> Also, make sure you have "Skip Frames if Behind" checked under Device, Configure in Media Player. That was it ! Actually, I find this out right after I posted my message <sg> (sheepish grin). I "installed" another CD with AVI's and it changed that setting without my knowledge – I was finally able to track it down. But my video card seems to skip too many frames with this on – how can I speed it up (or check if it's broken) ? Thanks for the help ! – Shane. ps. I have an ATI Graphics Pro Turbo (mach 64) 4 meg Local-Bus card on a 486-33 with lots-o-RAM.

>how can I speed it up (or check if it's broken) ? >ps. I have an ATI Graphics Pro Turbo (mach 64) 4 meg Local-Bus card on a 486-33 with lots-o-RAM. Hmm… The ATI should have no problem playing video. On a 486/33, you should be able to play 320×240@15fps from disk or CD. Since you say that the problem also occurs playing from disk, a bad CD driver may not be the problem. Look on the Jumpstart CD and find VidTest (in the vidtest directory). Run it, and read everything it says. It will diagnose your system and find weaknesses in streaming data, AVI playback, and video problems. There may also be some ini settings you can change for your video card (like DeviceBitmaps and off screen video buffering) to tweak it… check with ATI, and the documentation. Regards, Ian

How many colors are you trying to display, and at what resolution?

> How many colors are you trying to display, and at what resolution? 640x480x16mil. Now before you say "well, that's your problem right there – you're working in 24-bits", you should know that this is the *fastest* mode (yes, even quicker than 256 colors – go figure!). Anyway, I spent a lot of money on this video card and I'm not quite ready to trade it in for a Matrox. I'm happy with everything about it except for the speed (which is basically the most important part, I guess). I just want it optimized for TS 2.0… – Shane. ps. I just ran WinBench 4.0 and tested the graphics speed and I ended up with 12.2 mil Winmarks (the other numbers in order were 9.37, 5.45, 6.14, 18.4, 19.3, 16.1, 9.06). This was on my 486dx33 at 640x480x256 with my ATI Graphics Pro Turbo 4meg VLB. Does anyone know if these are even close to normal ? Thanks.

Still, it seems to me like there's a bottleneck somewhere.. Maybe that many bitplanes with the sound, etc. adds up? Dunno..

My 486/66 gets about 16 with a Herc Dyna Pro. So on a 33 w/ATI those sound about right. 24 bit is usually faster than 256 colors due to the fact the card doesn't operate with a palette. Is your 33 a VLB momboard? That would make a difference. Ian

Thanks for the info, Ian. Yes, my MB is loco-bus <g>. – Shane.
