#FLIC To AVI How?
7 messages in this thread
Hey –
sorry this isn't a typical ts inquiry but since I know there are great TECHIES
around here I wanna know who's the wiz to tell me how to convert an *.fli to
*.avi.
I've tried to convert an 8 frame animation with Premiere. Thing was it imported
only 7 frames and got into total mess with the frame rate. These problems
didn't occur with GWS but the colours changed. <Ha, ha, ha>
Will be very thankful since I need to use this for a presentation in Astound.
Has anybody experiences with Astound 2.0?

Sorry, but your problem is the pallet, right? .fli's are 8-bit and .avi's are
24-bit.. Is that what you were saying? If I read this wrong, please let me
know..

No it doesn't seem to be the palet.
I've had an fli with 8 frames. Importing it into Premiere 1 showed only 7
different frames and all that I could get to output was real jerky.
Maybe the palet thing occurs while converting with GWS. Actually I don't knoe
why there should be a problem when converting from 8 to 24 bit.

Premiere has a ton of options for it's output.. It also has quite a good
manual. <g> I'm not in front of our workStation with Premiere loaded, and I
can't remember all of the options, so I'll have to get back to you on this. The
important thing to look for would be that you're doing output at 30fps (only 7
frames will be short..) or 15fps *maybe*, but that could look jerky. Are you
saing you want to sustain each frame as it's displayed for a certain amount of
time before it's changed to the next frame? What exactly is the look you're
going for (besides not having it be jerky?) Are you sure it's not your
playback?
Video for DOS (the shareware one, don't know where to find it… I'm sooooo
useful) would be an excellent choice here… creating an uncompressed AVI, and
then working it later with Premiere.

Ian,
Video for DOS is in our Computer Animation Forum (GO COMANIM) as VFD.ZIP.

Terry-
Yeah, the handbook is a great suggestion. I'll check it on monday when I've got
my machine back to the office. As far as I can tell I know almost all options.
The lack is in my knowledge of flic formats.
Base time rate in Premiere is set to 30fps. The original FLI has 8 frames. When
I import it to Premiere I get 34 frames. Imagine what an 8 frame animation
looks like when you stretch it to 34 frames. Besides that Premiere only
imported 7 of 8 frames.
As I figured out with Autodesk Animation Player for Windows the original length
of the flic was set to 1.14 seconds with a speed of 7. Under that circumstance
the 34 frames seem o.k. but useless anyway. Guess I'll have to find out how to
change the intended length of the flic. (Which means I'll have to study the
Animator manual as well 🙂
OR DO YOU KNOW?
