#LW 4.0 System Req
7 messages in this thread
Does anyone know what the system requirements are (i.e. processor, memory and
hard disk space) for the Windows 3.1 version on LightWave 4.0? I have a
486DX/66 with only 8 MB RAM and about 100MB hard disk space remaining. Will
this do?

I think you'll need at _least_ 16 meg; I run 32 and it it hit's the swap on
occasion…..

Get a MUCH larger hard disk. A full install of the Lightwave & demo files is 60
megs. Also, I have 32 megs ram, and a couple of the demo scenes had me going in
to the swap by 20 megs. Great software though!

Replied to the wrong person! You're quoting from my reply! Anyways, you really
don't need _that_much HD space, unless you do a complete install…. Basically,
the installation merely copies the contents of the CDROM to you're HD, so you
could run the examples off the ROM….

Rob,
I haven't been successful in running any of the lightwave scene files off the
CD-Rom. My system crashes. However, after doing the full install, I have no
problems loading from disk. (I'm using Win95 though, not NT.) Have you been
able to load them directly off the CD?

Actually, I haven't tried it… You would have to change the lw.cfg file to
point to the correct CD directory, I think…

I recommend a larger (or a second) hard disk for the following reason:
If you are using Windows 3.1 you will want to move to Win95 or NT to take
advantage of multitasking. For example, I recently had my PC grinding 36 hours
straight through on an animation in Lightwave. While it's busy working in the
background, I'm modelling new objects, writing letters, etc without even
noticing the background rendering. It slows down the render somewhat, but
that's a small price to pay. In fact, if you have enough memory, you can render
a couple of projects simultaneously. Anyway, my point is that my Win95
directory is approaching 80 megs in size. But with the price of hard disks
these days, Windows 95 and another hard disk is the best upgrade you can do.
Another 8 megs of ram will go a long way for you as well. I was working on an 8
meg machine with Lightwave under win95 this weekend and it operated ok, but
with a large scene, I would expect rendering to slow down to a crawl as most of
the work would be paged off to the hard disk.
That's my 2 bits.
