Adaptec 1542b & SCSI

I have an Adaptec 1542b SCSI card running with an IDE drive card and a 1.3
gig SCSI hard disk on a 486 50. I've told setup that I don't have any hard
disk so that the Adaptec card will control the drive.
My problem is that when booting I get two 1.3 gig drives reported, one at
address ID 0 and one at 1. There's only the one drive in the system. When
I do a dir command both drives list identical files. If I save a file to
one disk, it appears on both. Obviously it's the same drive being found
twice and the system doesn't know it but I don't know where the glitch
happens. Any suggestions?

Jerry. I have seen a simular problem with HP drives. If you don't have
any drive select jumpers installed the drive will answer back as 6
different devices. Try scanning the scsi bus ( rom routine on the adaptec )
I'll bet it will look like you have 7 hard drives. Just put a jumper on
drive select 0 on the drive and you will be in business. If you don't have
the docs on the drive just scan the scsi bus to see what effect the jumpers
have, it is necessary to power down the drive after changing the jumpers.

Actually I figured out the problems before I read your message. The first
problem was that the terminators were still installed on the Adaptec card
which gave three terminators instead of two (which stopped the SCSISCAN
from finding the CDD 521). The second problem was the ID of the SCSI HD
was set to 7 as factory default and unchanged. I reset it to ID 0 and it
works fine. The only glitch now is that the SCSISCAN shows the CDD 521
showing up six times but it list the proper ID each time and I can't see
that it's hurting anything.

Good job Jerry. It's a good thing I read the entire thread. That's
exactly what I was going to suggest. I'm surprised your system didn't act
like it had seven identical drives installed. Thats usually the symptom.
