I'm trying to take an internal floppy from a dead A2000 and make it a
second internal floppy (DF1:) for my A2500. What do I need to do to make
it work? Thanx! —Mike

Add a jumper across J301 (near the drive ribbon cable socket on the
mother board). The drive itself shouldn't need any jumper changes.
Of course, you also need to new drive into power and the drive
cable <grin>.

I put a jumper on J301, but it is still screwy. If I only have one of
the two drives connected to the multipin connector (either drive on either
of the two connectors), that drive works fine (as df0:). When both are
plugged in neither work.

In addition to the J301 jumper on the motherboard, you need to change a
jumper on the drive that's going to be DF1:. (DF0: is at the end of the
cable, df1 is actually before it.) Since the drive manufacturers vary, the
actuall setup of the jumpers will vary. Anyway, df1 should have it's
address set to 1.

Is the DF1: you are trying to install a High Density drive?? If you are,
you have to leave the J301 jumper set to DF0: only and change the jumper on
the bottom of the disk drive to DF1: (bottom row of pins, jump the left one
and the center one). Don't ask me why, but a High Density has to be set at
the Drive only. If you change the J301 jumper to say DF1:, it won't work
right!!.

I don't know if it's high density; they're both Chinon FB-354s, both came
standard with an A2000 (one each). They have the jumper config you
mentioned, so I'll give it a try and let you know.

I did what you said to do and now it onl;y recognizes DF0. I was going
to try to put the jumper back on J301 but the jumper broke, and it was the
only one I had.
I'm beginning to hate this. <g>

I'm sorry the jumper broke. Only the HD would work correctly with the
config. I gave you. If they are reg Chinnon drives, you would have to set
the one on the end of the 23 pin lead as DF0: (bottom roe of jumpers with
the center and right one jumped) and the one that connects in the middle of
the lead as DF1: (bottom roe of pins with left and center jumped). You
would also have to select DF1: on the J301 jumper. A high density drive
will have a sensor on both the left and RIGHT side of the drive where the
disk goes in. The sensors would check for the holes in the disk (write
protect on the left and HD on the right. If there isn't a sensor on the
right side, they are regular 880 drives. Sorry if any of what I mentioned
caused you any problems.

That more than likely means you don't have a "twisted" floppy
cable, so change the ID jumper on your "new" drive and you should be all
set.
