#TypeSmith Print Problems

Okay, I tried it at work today as well…on a HPIIP with a Pacific Page
Postscript cartridge. In that setup, I was using Workbench 2.1 and the
Postscript driver bundled with it. When using the "Show Type Preview"-print
preview, it said it was printing and stayed that way for a good 20 minutes
before I came back and cancelled it. Then I tried Print Preview from the
Project menu, and it did create about a 1700K Postscript file…which the
printer took, and when it reached the end of the file, just reset and failed to
produce any output. I did not try anything in HP mode.
..BTW, that was on a 3000, Workbench 2.1, 5 Megs of RAM.
At my home, I have a 2500, Workbench 2.1, 7 Megs of RAM, C='s A2630, Panasonic
KXP-1124 using the "PanasonicPlus.020" driver from the public domain (which
does an incredible job–even with Pagestream using the Preferences.printer
driver). Printing from either the Show Type Preview or from the Project/Print
Preview yeilded the same results… A solid black printout. If I turn on
"Negative" (only available in Project/Print Preview) then it just advances the
paper…no printing. Both routines successfully complete (unlike the situation
with Postscript I described above) but yield no output.
So far…I'm 0 for 2 in trying to get the Print Preview…thanks for looking
into it.
BTW, that maintenance update you mentioned…will that be distributed online
via a patch file or ???

Here is another TypeSmith user with a print problem. I received Typesmith
yesterday (registration 700902). My computer is an A2000 with a 68030
Derringer board, O/S 2.1, 1 meg chip ram; 10 megs fast ram. I have the
preferences postscript driver v2.0d installed and I print to an Okidata OL830
postscript printer. When I attempt "print preview", the printer initiates,
and the screen requester says "printing is progress"; but nothing else
happens. After approx 20 minutes, the printer times out. What really irks me
is that after calling the Soft Logik hot-line about 20 times, I finally got
through to a young lady who didn't seem to have a clue. When I asked if she
had heard of this problem before, she said no! From reading the messages on
this bulletin board however, it appears the problem is well-known. I would
appreciate any help, clues or hints you can provide. Best regards Rick Geren
Rick: the print preview to postscript problem is not widespread, and we have
had some problems duplicating it. It's not on tech support's list of known
problems, because we don't yet know the cause.
However, the programmer believes he has made some progress in this regard (he
hasn't been able to duplicate the problem either, but has an idea what may be
causing it.) We'll be releasing a maintenance upgrade later this week anyway,
and these changes will be in that version, so this problem may already be
solved.

Michael: Thanks. The impending maintenance upgrade to TypeSmith is good news.
By the way; except for the printing problem, it is a fantastic program and has
not given any other problems./ Using Soft-Logik products makes me feel good
about owning an Amiga! Ever consider doing a spreadsheet?

BTW, is TypeSmith REALLY a SoftLgik program? I think I read a review about
a year ago of a software package by a german company (GoldVision? bsc?)
that was suspiciously similar in appearance to TS…

TypeSmith is basically the same program as FontDesigner written by Relog and
published by BSC. We added a lot of interface changes to make it more
consistant with our product line.

Yeah, I thought something like that… Have you bought the program or just
the rights for US or something along that line? Do I get FontDesigner or
TypeSmith in Germany (from DTM or bsc)?
Can I order my upgrade to PGS 3.0 here? Or do I have to go to DTM? Do they
know of my registration (sent direct to you…)?

Chris: if you live in Germany you must purchase FontDesigner from BSC, not
TypeSmith from us. We have the English speaking country rights only.
DTM does not sell either version of the program. Although they are our
distributor in Germany, BSC has the German rights.
Relog wrote the program, BSC is the world-wide publisher, and we are the
English speaking language sub-publisher. 😉
TypeSmith is a little different from FontDesigner. Slightly different feature
set, completely different manual. No German commands—just English and French.

So, I don't like German Programs very much, in fact I go for English
versions if at all possible. I also have bought the English version of
PageStream 2.2 because English terminology has become kinda 'standardized'
through the years whereas developers of German programs tend to make up
their own… ;^) So, CAN I get TS/FD in english from bcs???
My second question was about ordering my PGS 3.0 upgrade (MC/VISA payment)
via CI$ from you (or do I have to contact DTM about this – and do they
know of my registrations with you)???

BSC sells FontDesigner which can switch languages on the fly between English,
German and French. We sell TypeSmith which can change languages between English
and French only.
Note that if you have read reviews of TypeSmith that the current version of
FontDesigner may be quite different.
We are not allowed to sell to customers located outside of English speaking
countries and must direct you to bsc, according to our contract. Sorry that I
can't help you. If you purchase from a mail order company we will support you
though.
DTM does not sell TypeSmith or FontDesigner. If you insist on ordering
TypeSmith you will have to do so by mail order since we can't sell it to you. I
can't even recommend a mail order company to you, so you're on your own.
