I'm running T7G on a 486/66 with VL-bus (rated video at 100%) and the panning
is still kind of choppy. The CDROM is a Toshiba 3301 (150k xfer rate). I've
just gotten a copy of Speedcache + 4.0 but have not been able to get a
configuration that works well with T7G. Setting the read ahead too high doesn't
work well. Can you recommend an optimal setting?
Thanks, Norm
I'm not able to help out on specifics. It sounds like you certainly have the
hardware. T7G does not render the rooms in real time. The CD contains a couple
thousand previously rendered frames that comprise all the views of the rooms
you get to see. When you move, it shows a dozen frames in sequence as you move.
It does not show smooth video. I assume you are not talking about what I just
described, but some other form of choppy video.
My machine is an "old" (2 years) 486/33 with diamond speedstar and NEC CD-74
CDROM. It does not rate optimal on either video or transfer rate, but it works
OK, except that sometimes I get a little breakup in the speech when a lot of
movement of the "ghosts" is taking place.

Actually, the choppy video I was referring to earlier was what you've explained
as the previously rendered frames. I guess I've been spoiled by looking at
other (although less detailed) animations from other games that smoothly
animate on this machine. The digitized scenes animate very smoothly, though and
I've yet to experience any speech breakup with the ghosts so maybe I really
shouldn't complain! I've tried playing with the read-ahead on Speedcache and
got some pretty interesting results. At 63k read-ahead (the highest setting)
the movement scenes would "lurch" After getting some scenes in the buffer it
would animate very nicely but there's still a tradeoff. I've found that setting
everything back to defaults seems to be the best way to go.
Thanks, Norm
