#Help needed on a project

Please help us by calling Jim or Dwane at 1-504-467-7171 or faxing an answer to

During a project using Studio 3D for a crane operation simulation, we
ran into the following problem that we have been unable to find an answer for
in the manual and in a series of learning tapes. There is a cable that's hooked
to the crane that lowers or raises the boom. It has about seven sections to it
and we are using the hierarchy link. What can we do to keep the cable in place
and shorten it as the boom moves up or down?

Is the cable Hierarchicaly linked to the crane, and is the cable in seven
sections or are there seven sections to the whole model?
What I would do is, not link the cable at both ends to the crane but have
it linked at it's lowest point to the crane and rotate it so it touches
the crane at it's topmost point (the boom). Then as the boom raises and
lowers, tilt the cable to match it, using "scale" on the cable if you need
to.

Why don't you just use the Modify -> Object -> 2D Scale while in the
keyframer and simply make the cable go from a long one to a short one over a
series of frames?

PMJI, but if the other excellent suggestions don't word, and there is a large
piece of geometry adjacent (preferrably at a steep angle to the cable) you can
have the cable enter this adjacent geometry (i.e. a servo box that is attached
to the main body of the crane). The main geometry will hide the cable as it
enters, and you will have the illusion of spooling, or shortening cable.
