We use market research to get classic info on users, but we use the actual
system itself (whatever it happens to be) to log activities on usage. Usually
we can get ID numbers for the device (set-top box, PDA, CD-I player, whatever)
and we use this to match the market research survey data to the household using
the device.
Sounds like Scala's diversification plan is a step above the usual PC/MAC
strategy, Bravo!
Does the General Instrument sat transceiver allow real interactivity from the
user to the satelite and the provider like fiber and cable? Inquiring minds
wanna know…

The current specification on the GI satellite transceiver does allow for
limited interactivity. For example, the transceiver will receive scheduling
and program changes, interactive pay-per-view menuing, parental lockout, etc.
More sophisticated interactive functions like games and messaging will be in
next generation hardware and software. Right now, limited interactivity and a
low-cost box is what is needed to get a foot-in-the-door.
