Does anyone know where I can get my hands on digitized topographical maps of
the Boston or New England area. I need a 3D terrain mesh (and texture map if
possible) of the area. Any ideas would be welcomed.

I would probably get in touch with local Civil engineering groups.
I.e., if it were electric, I'd go to N.Y. Power Authority… that's geographic
/ COGO / whathaveyou, so I think I'd start calling wherever that would be.

I spoke with someone else suggesting I contact the City Engineer's Office for
Boston. I'll give that a shot. I still need to find out an appropriate
scale not being familiar with those used for topographic maps. I want enough
detail to recognize hills, rivers, harbours, etc but not so much that I can't
render it. Maybe a simplified mesh with a detailed texture/bump map will do.

The USGS is the place you want. You'll need to know what quadarangles you need.
Schreiber's Geokit and maybe VistaPro will import this data and create a mesh.

As in Canada, there are terrain maps put out by your government in electronic
format (by the Geological survey perhaps?). There are also commercial
distributers – one commonly advertises in the back of CADENCE magazines. If you
check the Acad forum (GO CIS:ACAD) someone will be able to point you in the
right direction (maybe check the GIS/Maps section). From what I recall, these
are generally inexpensive (<$100?), although I can't remember what scale they
are provided at. Our provincial base maps are available at around 1:10,000 but
we also can get better scales from Municipal planning / engineering
