I recently acquired a SBPro with CDROM interface, but no drive (this was
before I knew about the package). According to the manual, only the drive
supported by Creative can be used with the interface, which I don't believe
for a minute. Can anyone give a precise description of the drives that will
work safely with the interface?

Jim–The interface is proprietary, the only CD ROM's that work are one's
that say they are soundblaster pro compatable. Panasonic makes drives that
are compatable, Creative markets an upgrade kit with the CDROM and some
software. Since the kit is about $360 you might by the Creative kit. The
other choice is to buy a low cost CDROM (i.e. Mitsumi) and use the
controllor that comes with it (will cost you a slot).
Yes, it is proprietary and you can't use any CD ROM with it except one
that is SB Pro specific. You CAN just buy the drive–the local Babbages
here even sells them, as do most places that sell the C/L cards–but that
means if you upgrade your audio later you'll also have to change CD ROM
drives. C/L has been getting yelled at for this for years but to no avail
(other competing cards have basic SCSI-2 interfaces that can take almost
any CD ROM that's SCSI-2 compliant, which is most of them, although they
don't have the full daisy chaining abilities). Like you, I have a SB Pro,
but I also have to run my CD ROM off a separate SCSI-2 card.
