Let me clean the hair from my hands.. just a sec.. Okay, now, I have a .GIF file that I am trying to use as a texture map (actually, I am going to use it as a decal), and I have been able to preview it okay for a while, saved it, took it into the Editor and applied it to an object, but I got black. I then went back into the Materials Editor and hit RENDER SAMPLE, but the sample that is rendered is black now as well. I then hit VIEW IMAGE and selected the same GIF file that is rendering black in the Materials Editor and I CAN see it there. What is going on? Thanks.

James, It may have something to do with scaling and the decal is actually located in the corner of your map icon, too small to see. If you have AAPro, clip the image as a cel and use it for the material map or try scaling the map icon way up. Check to make sure tiling is set to x=1.0 y=1.0 also. Remember that when you're in Decal mode the upper left hand pixel of the bitmap is the key (transparent) color. Is it possible that this pixel is the same as the majority of your bitmap and so is making it transparent? – Phil
