#Fade out on flic render

A few days ago I saw a reply to someone elses problem from one of the
sysops. In the reply, they asked if the flic got progressively dark.
I have a few flics that start out with proper light. In a thirty frame
flic, the objects blackout buy the 15th frame almost completely. I've
tried everything I know (which isn't everything) and rerendered over
and over but still the same end result. Please help. I'm pulling my
hair out on this one.
I'm running a 486DX4 100 , maxtor eide 850 HD , and Stealth 64 VRAM PCI .

I got this quote from you before. I just can't believe it. I've
reinstalled 3ds4 at least 5 times trying both hard drives C: and D:
and still the same deal. Checked for a virus and have found none.
Someone on this board, maybe not a sysop, sounded as though they knew
what this problem was or had seen or heard of it before. I guess
I'll contact my dealer, I just thought I'd try hear first because it
was convienent.

Sorry about the repeat of the same message, didn't realize it was to you
before.
Getting in touch with your dealer sounds like it's the best bet. It's usually
an indicator that something has "touched" the 3DS.EXE files and loading from a
fresh set of disks may be in order.
Make sure you do another virus scan before using the new set of disks, just in
case<G>
Maybe someone has another cause of flics fading to black and will catch your
message.

The message Ted sent you is the generic response to this problem, and the
problem of vertices being scattered everywhere at random. Both are signs that
the 3ds.exe file has been corrupted. Based on the previous message base, the
three top reasons for this corruption is: (1) the user is using a cracked copy
of 3ds, (2) a virus is playing games with your files, and (3) your hard
disk/controller is acting up on you. So Ted's response was the diplomatic
version <g>.
If possible, I would first do a virus check on the 3ds floppies, and then try
installing 3ds on another computer just to see if it runs. If it runs there,
the problem is definitely with your machine. Best bets of a cause would be
hard disk, controller, bios memory shadowing, external cache. Your dealer
ought to be able to help you sort all of this out.

little more info and you did. I bought this 3ds4 used about 4 months ago. It
came with manuals and hardware key so I assumed it was legit. I hope it is or
going to be pretty steamed if it is not. Anyway, I am going to try it on
another machine. My bios is an award 1994. Maybe the board is bugged. Oh well,

Take the hardware lock off the machine and see if it still runs. If it does,
then someone might have sold you a cracked copy with a bogus lock and some old
manuals just so you'd think it was legitimate.

I figure people that ask about random vertices and fading flics, and never show
their face again probably had a cracked version, and knew it. You were
persistent <g>. As a stupid question, do the floppies have official Adesk
labels on them with a purple stripe along the right side of the label? Laser
printers can make a pretty convincing label, but that purple should be hard to
duplicate.
Hardware incompatibilities with 3ds can be hard to track down. 3ds runs in 32
bit mode, and that places demands on the computer that "normal" programs don't.
I just got my computer back together again after a run in with page fault
messages.
Your best first bet would be to try 3ds out on another computer. Any 386 with
4 megs RAM or better will do. You don't care about speed, just functionality.
If it doesn't work there, I hope you know the guy that sold it to you, and have
a couple of (very large) persuasive friends.
If it does work on the other machine, leave a detailed hardware list of what
you have – computer type, video type, any other boards in the system.
We should probably take this over to the hardware section (section 3) for
hardware debugging.

Could it be that you are using POWER.EXE in your startup? This may cause
symptoms such as the fading to black. REM it out if its there. Worth a shot.
The vertice mess sounds like corruption though and new diskettes may be the
wisest move.

I don't remember any references to power.exe causing the fade to black, just v

corruption. I don't think he's getting that.
