#3DS to video-tape
16 messages in this thread
Wonder if anyone could help me :
I need to record my animations on VHS-video, actually I record my animations
from the output of my targa-board, but the quality is not that good. Is there a
VHS machine (or S-VHS) which can record image by image? (with diaquest
control) or do I have to get a betacam??
any help will be appreciated

The Sanyo GVR-S950 and -S955 both record frame-by-frame on VHS and S-VHS
tapes. It has its own built-in controller. They run about $3,000 US.
I had lots of problems with my unit, and eventually returned it, but I
know others have used them without incident. I purchased a DPS PAR instead
(which outputs VHS (composite), S-video, MII, and Betacam) and am very happy
with its performance.

Thank you very much for your response,

Does that mean that I don't need to buy a diaquest controller??
I don't know the significance of the words DPS PAR,
I think I stick to the S-VHS solution, over here a Betacam SP cost about
17000 dollars
thanks again Uri

Right. The Sanyo comes with a driver that 3DS uses to control the deck.

It is the Personal Animation Recorder, which acts like a computer VTR. It
is a full length video card that you hook up to a dedicated hard drive. Using
the PAR software, you can playback, record, and edit video. You can then play
it straight out to whatever kind of VTR you want to hook up to it (VHS, S-VHS,
Hi-8, Beta, etc.). Every tape will be a first generation tape! There is
support for PAL (European) video standards too. There's sure to be info on it
in the libraries, search with the keyword PAR.
Many people here use it for pre-visualizations of top notch 3DS work,
while others like myself use it for industrial-level work, such as
architectural animations, local and cable TV, etc. It is really the way to go
if you are going to VHS, in my opinion.

Thank you for the response,
Got the informations, about the PAR, there's a local dealer over here who sells
that card for about 3600 dollars, with PAL support. So I'll to buy it directly
from the US.
best regards
Uri
Uri,
You're welcome. 🙂 You'll really love the PAR!

I can't add much more to Paul Sanford's reply. The DPS PAR board is
used by many of our animation customers as a reasonable alternative to
high-priced recording decks. And with the expanded capabilities
promised by DPS's new Perception board, along with the updated
RAZOR editing software, the 'little guys' are going to have a lot more
bang for their meager bucks!
Call us for more information on the PAR system, how it's used, how it
works, and what it may do for you.

The only product I have experiance with is the PAR system from Digital
Processing Systems, Inc. This system is perfect for your needs.
In Europe you can contact them at 01252-718300 of FAX 01252-718400
Thanks Graham,
Could you indicate in which country the Fax number directs to ?

Matrox has a product called the Animation Xpress which is a digital animation
recorder. It plays back broadcast-quality animations directly from hard disk
in real time. It features digital component 4:2:2 video processing at full
CCIR-601 resolution, 30 frames (60 fields ) per second, and JPEG compression.
Please post your address to me if you want me to send you more information on
the product.

Please Define the CCIR-601 Spec. for us.

The following definition was extracted from "The Digital Fact Book":
"CCIR-601 specifies encoding parameters for digitised video. CCIR-601 is
normally taken to refer to colour difference component digital video (rather
than RGB) for which it defines 4:2:2 sampling at 13.3 MHz with 720 luminance
per active line and 8 or 10 bit digitising."
I hope this answers your question.

Lori,
Actually I don't want to go in to any more detail on the open forum than I have
to right now.
Except to say I noticed you didn't mention the rest of the equation regarding
the final
output resolution of the Matrox Max.
720 x 486 is _your_ published spec. Right?
To get the rest of this story I suggest you speak with Conroy in your Technical
Support Department or Nadia, Perhaps James at Drastic would be willing to shed
some light here too. Just mention Bob Batal's name. You'll be Painfully
enlightened as I have been since November of 1994.
Regarding the Matrox Max Software:
I understand you have a new version that is supposed to be shipping.
I'm Holding my Breath.

Lori – It's good to see manufacturers get on-line. A short time ago I asked if
anyone was interested in discussing today's multi-media market – "How do I go
from designing to modeling to presentations." Matrox has a number of excellent
products that address various aspects of these markets. Your Impressions board
is a good solution for CAD design, model-checking, and first-run animations,
while the MAXX, the Marvel II hit the animation and MM presentation end.
I look forward to seeing more discussion on these products between yourself and
users in the future.
