Dave, answers to a couple of your questions <<no HIMEM or EMM386 being used (for now), right?>> Wrong <G> I have HIMEM/EMM386 installed. I have Qemm 386 (Don't know what version) that I can install. Memory management is not my long suit by any stretch of the imagination. I don' t know how to remove the HIGHMEM and EMM386 but will study the reference material I have. Do you want me to install the QEMM then? >> << do you have a CDROM installed?>> Yes << <brand and model?> Sony CDU33A >> <<what video card are you using>> Artist Graphics XJ1000 << <<do you have a spare standard SVGA card around anywheres? do you have the VESA drivers for it? a quick swap out might tell us instantly if this is a graphics/memory-related problem.>> I have an Orchid Pro Designer II in a 486/66 but only have 16 Megs of RAM in it and I would have to load AniPro into it. (which I will gladly do if you think this will help solve this) << also (just so's i can say i asked) have you contacted Artist and asked them about this weirdness and handed them the symptoms? do they have new drivers for it and any clues?>> No, but I will do so tomorrow <<any other drivers supplied for this card including VESA or non ADI?>> I don't think so. I configured my present setup with the telephoned instructions from Artists…so I don't know if there are alternate drivers available <<does the program seem to behave itself when the first flic is manipulated only (try busting the first flic into 2 using flic/segment), save out as separate files, then join them back together…>> This worked well << bust the second flic in half, save out as two separat files and join first to first flic>> This also worked <<, then second… we'll see if its a flic size thing.>> This did not work..the computer locked up I guess it is a memory thing….please tell me what you want me to do next. Paul

(which I will gladly do if you think this will help solve this) << kewl. put the Orchid into the P5, load the Orchid VESA drivers (let me know if you need them, we'll point the way) and see if problem resolves when set to same resolution as flics. if it does, we can start working on Artist options. if it still locks up, we can assume the problem is related to something else. sleuthing is working from bare bones up to full config. the process is tedious, but it works. 😉 let me know if Artist suspects anything. be sure to hang on dearly to your original system file configuration files as we strip them down for analysis. >> <<does the program seem to behave itself when the first flic is manipulated only (try busting the first flic into 2 using flic/segment), save out as separate files, then join them back together…>> This worked well << bust the second flic in half, save out as two separat files and join first to first flic>> This also worked <<, then second… we'll see if its a flic size thing.>> This did not work..the computer locked up << so you were able to join "half" of the second flic to the entire first, but not the full second flic. sounds like a memory conflict alright. believe it or not, this is a good sign. Orchid SVGA will tell us much also. so will "rem" out memory managers QEMM, EMM386 and HIMEM. let me know if things behave with these alterations. we're actually getting very close. -dave

Hi Dave I have just finished talking to Artist Graphics….We changed to a VESA driver (written by the Yost Group, according to Artist) at 640X480 (same as the flics). During the Preview phase the animation paused at the end of flic A, there was a flash of colors then the Please Wait….. message, jumped to last frame of flic B and then to frame 1 of flic A. I started to Render and got the message: Moving C:\PAAT /AATEMP.FLC size 21583536 free 28017493 After it finished(Returned to frame 1 of flic A) I attempted to play it back….the computer did not lock up instead I got the message: Abnormal program termination: Memory protection fault CS: EIP=000CH : 00052ACDh and returned to the directory prompt. I tried it a second time and the same thing happened except the message ended with 0003F480h. Config.Sys had all the Devices etc. REM'd Artists Graphics said this proves that it is not the card and recommended that I not change to the Orchid for trial but that the problem lies elswhere. What now, Doctor??? Again, let me thank you for staying with me on this!!!! Paul "Is this any way to spend one's time" Soderberg BTW where do you call home? I'm CST (near Houston)

Again, let me thank you for staying with me on this!!!! << sorry this is taking so long. feel free to post me your phone in email too if you like, we can try a few other things AFTER the orchid tryout. <g> >> Paul "Is this any way to spend one's time" Soderberg BTW where do you call home? Dave, Everything is working very well now. I activated my old Config.Sys with the Himem, EMM386, CDRom, DblSpace etc. and have joined two more segments onto my Flic. I am doing one segment per day (Render in 3DS4 at night and do the AniPro thing in the morning). Will wait until I'm finished before I try the one pallet program. Thank you again for all of your help…I hope I have the chance to someday repay your kindness. Paul

Dave, Paul You're keeping us all in suspense. How did your problem go away. It wasnt the Orchid Card or the other card, what was it?
#175512From: Paul B. SoderbergJun 15, 1995 9:29 AM
Sorry Mark…the problem was apparently a corruption of the animation files in 3DS4. When these files were converted to GIFs, then back to FLCs in AniPro it corrected the problem. The Flic is now 80 Megs in size and growing. 🙂

>> You're keeping us all in suspense. How did your problem go away. It wasnt the Orchid Card or the other card, what was it? << it was… too … ugly… to post here. <gasp> <wheeze>… Paul and i… barely… survived the… <wheeze> … ordeal…. you … don't want… to know… <g> actually, after we tried several things and found the problem to be "local" during the join process, i began to suspect file corruption, so i had Paul bust up his two flics into halves, then use NUMPIC to output the flic to individual GIFs… then reassemble them all for full FLC integrity. bingo. -dave
