Whappers: Hi there! Having success? There was something I omitted from the doc file. It's important. There are 3 parameters of your permanent CompuServe profile that you must check, or change, manually. This release of Whap! does not do it. Future versions will. Make sure your Top Page is defined as MAIN. Set Brief prompts to YES (expert mode). Set EasyPlex to NOTIFY ONLY. If you've had problems because these were not set, set them manually, delete whatever Tnnnn files you may have (T2400, T1200, or T300) and have Whap! go for it again. And yes, a new, hopefully much improved doc is being written.

Hi yourself! I'm just trying the beast out for the first time (this IS the first message run.) So far, I've noticed a few things: 1. It and Access! just don't fit on a WB disk (I'm launching from CLI but have all the bootup junk on disk) along with forum parameters. Moved the term program and parameters to DF1: and it seems to be fine. 2. I sure could use another page for forums. <grin> Since Amigaforum tripled, I run out of options before I get all the forums I check listed. 3. I don't see how to get this thing to work in the sysop forum. It has a page (CR to pass thru) before getting into the sig itself. Any hints? 4. I had to stick the View! file into the Parameters directory (on the DF1:) to make it work. The docs say you should have it where Whap! lives…. and I have Whap! in DF0: root. 5. What Whap!.info file? Wasn't in my archive, though the docs indicate there should be one for WB users.

Hi Bill! Whap! and Access! should co-reside. I haven't tried it though. If you delete the unnecessary stuff from your WB disk and put Whap! on it you should have approximately 45% of the disk space free. In this case, however, I wouldn't suggest going wild with getting all messages from 10 forums. You're going to run out of room. Whap! is really great to run from hard disk where you don't have to worry about space. It works well with a 2 floppy system. I don't think it would run from a 1 floppy system without a lot of inconveniences. I have not tested a 1 floppy system. Another page of forums? A consideration for the second registered version. The first registered version will be what you have now minus the annoying guilt screen plus any minor bug fixes or cosmetic changes that get reported in the next 2-3 weeks. Since I don't have access to Sysop Forum I don't know first hand. But, the sysops here who have been testing this thing report that it works fine. When the More ! prompt is seen Whap! automatically sends out a <cr>. Try it and let me know. What is the name of the disk you have Whap! on? It should be called WHAP. If the disk is named WHAP or you've done an ASSIGN WHAP: DF0:<diskname>, View!, and all of the other necessary Whap! related files will live quite happily in that directory. If you got it to reside comfortably in another directory, great! But it does not have to be there. I forgot the icon!? Yeah, well, I would. I don't use WB much. I'll upload it a bit later. Best, -jcs-

I'm having trouble with the assign direction. What is Assign Whap: stuff doing? Is the volume name Whap or Whap! Are you assigning a disk name to a file? I tried assigning Whap: to a directory where I put the Sig files in and It wouldn't work….I dunna understan???
#495From: Steve AhlstromJul 15, 1988 11:42 PM
George, If you're running from floppy with Whap! and View! in the root directory, name the disk WHAP — no assign will be necessary. If you have the programs in a subdirectory on a floppy or harddisk, then make the assignment of WHAP to that subdirectory.
#562From: George GlinesJul 16, 1988 12:55 PM
Steve, but if you name the disk Whap, you can't assign Whap to a subdirectory, right? Anyway, I renamed the disk and assigned to a sub-directory and the program loads now. Thanks! George
#604From: Jul 16, 1988 4:59 PM
George, If you name a disk WHAP stick all the files in the root directory. Doing it this way you don't need the assign. Best, -jcs-

I've gotten Whap to go online now. It will get me into a forum, start to read the message headers (maybe 10 or so) and then just hang…I've tried waiting up to 6 minutes. The hangup and abort gadgets don't work here. Nothing I type will go to the modem. I have to reboot when this happens. Same thing happens when reading marked messages, Whap will read a few and then hang..until I reboot. I've got my Profile set to the right options, and preferences set at 2400 baud (for Access!). George, You do not have your CompuServe parameters set up correctly. If you have 1.0D get 1.1D, it's easier on you to set up your parameters. However, if you don't want to get 1.1D, here's what you do. Log on with whatever term program you normally use. GO DEFAULT. Edit your logon/service options. Set Top Page = MAIN, BRIEF = YES, EasyPlex = NOTIFY ONLY. Make those permanent and log off. Then go to WHAP: and delete the Tnnnn file (T2400 or T1200 or T300, whichever one exists). Now if you do get 1.1D all you have to do is delete the Tnnnn file, the program will take care of the other stuff. Best, -jcs-

That's the settings I have, except I haven't seen a brief = yes. What I've seen is menu or command and I am in command mode. George

Bill, A little trick I was using for a while with it; if you run out of room for forums, you can make several assigned directories for whap: and (re-)assign just before use. It means quitting and restarting for the next bunch, but allows you to keep several configurations for it. Best method is using vd0: for messages if you have the ram for it. Absolute best is runnng from HD. (a thing of beauty and a joy forever!) Doug

Jim, I've been setting up my Whap! Boot Disk, and have some questions (I'm still leaving this with Access!). Where do I find the fastdir command you list as necessary in your l directory? It isn't in my Workbench's l. How much of Access! do I need to copy on to my Whap! disk, and why? Finally, where is the Whap!.info file. It was in the arc file. Thanks, Lee
#213From: Jul 13, 1988 3:26 PM
Hi Lee! Looks like I should have cleaned up my directory a bit more. fastdir is not needed. It's a file that CLImate writes to disk when it does a directory. You need everything from Access!. If you chose the "Interactive Terminal" option or click on the toggle "Log Off at End/Stay Online", what happens is that Whap! calls your defined terminal program and goes away. The defined program runs. When you terminate it, Whap! returns. So, you need whatever files are necessary for Access! to run as a standalone. I forgot the icon from archive. I'll upload it later. Best, -jcs-
#215From: Lee SheldonJul 13, 1988 4:12 PM
Jim, Okay, thanks for the quick response. I'm still having problems in the opening stages here. I've copied whapcis.font into Whap!'s fonts directory as instructed, but I get a message up front that Whap! can't find "whapcis font." Notice the empty space there BTW. Any ideas? Thanks, Lee
#216From: Jul 13, 1988 4:34 PM
Lee, It sounds like you have reassigned FONTS: to somewhere else. Double check. If you followed the doc and did a …. MAKEDIR FONTS:THIN COPY thin.font FONTS: COPY thin8 FONTS:THIN/8 MAKEDIR FONTS:Whapcis COPY whapcis.font FONTS: COPY Whapcis8 FONTS:Whapcis/8 everything should work fine unless you're reassigning FONTS: somewhere else. Best, -jcs-
#222From: Lee SheldonJul 13, 1988 6:19 PM
Jim, My fonts directory LOOKS okay. And since my WB loads itself on to VD0:, there is the potential for confusion. But ASSIGNS are getting me nowhere. I'm still exploring. It might be helpful if I knew what you'd like to see in the startup-sequence on my Whap disk. In the meantime, I'm going to redo my fonts directory from scratch, although it looks fine to me. Oh, I've been doing assign like this… ASSIGN WHAP: FONTS. Wouldn't that get me where I want to go? Thanks, Lee
#225From: Jul 13, 1988 6:35 PM
Lee, If you load the fonts directory into VD0: (why? That's time consuming and probably memory inefficient. Fonts are normally only loaded once) then after the fact you have to do a ASSIGN FONTS: VD0:FONTS. And no, if you do a ASSIGN WHAP: FONTS the program will look in your fonts directory to find Whap! and it's auxillary files. If you are using floppy, name the disk that Whap! is on WHAP. You will then not have to do an explicit assign for Whap!. That, of course is assuming you have it in the root directory. If you have it in a sub-directory, you will have to do the assign. Again, if you move FONTS: to VD0: or anywhere else, you'd best assign it's location or no program is going to find it. Best, -jcs-
#231From: Henry ColonnaJul 13, 1988 7:11 PM
Jim, that could be source for some confusion. Whap! wants an assign of WHAP:, while the program's called WHAP!, so's the docs, the icon, etc.
#253From: Lee SheldonJul 13, 1988 11:31 PM
Jim, I run a program from ASDG that came with my Micron 2mb add-on board. Since I have 3 mb to play with, the program gives me my WB in ram (much faster obviously), and also frees up my two drives for copying without swapping, etc. The program does all the copying and assigns for me automatically in the startup-sequence, and the WB survives warm boots. Yes, it takes a while longer to load, but it's really very handy. My disk IS called Whap. And Whap! is in the root directory. I know I must be missing something really simple. I'm diving back into it right now. I'll let you know. Lee
#264From: Jul 14, 1988 12:16 AM
Lee, It sounds to me that you load your workbench, it copies all sorts of stuff to VD0:, including FONTS:, and does the proper assigns. Then you load in your Whap! disk. On your Whap! disk you also have a FONTS: directory. The system doesn't know about it because you've assigned FONTS to VD0: Here's what you do. Kill the FONTS directory from the Whap! disk, install the fonts to your PERMANENT FONTS directory, the one that gets copied to VD0: Best, -jcs-
#278From: Lee SheldonJul 14, 1988 2:20 AM
Jim, You're exactly right. I went the easier route and put everything on my bootable Whap! disk. After a warm boot, I'm getting Whap's fonts, not vd0:'s as hoped. I've now set up my parameters, and am ready to log-on, but I'm getting an error message: DSR Signal not detected. Please check your modem. My modem's on, and had just been used by Access! with no hitches. Any ideas? Thanks, Lee <getting closer all the time> P.S. Check is on the way.
#280From: Steve AhlstromJul 14, 1988 2:30 AM
Access doesn't look for DSR — Whap! does. It monitors it in case you get a MONNCI or other nasties in case your node drops carrier. Flip the dip switch and you should be set.
#284From: Lee SheldonJul 14, 1988 3:47 AM
Jim, Steve helped me. I flipped a dip switch, and I'm set. Just downloaded and replied to my first set of messages. Very smooth! I'll begin to explore things in greater detail tomorrow, but for now, only 1 question. 8) Access! is loading its default parameters rather than my files when loaded during a Whap! session. Is that because it's loading from the CLI and needs some additional Whoa, what happened there? …additional arguments in the CLI command? How can I get those? Lee
#301From: Jul 14, 1988 9:04 AM
Lee, Glad to hear that you are up and running. Access is using it's default parameters instead of what you want it to? That could be the same problem you had with the FONTS: directory. Access stores its parameters in a file called acc!.def. That file must be in s: or in your current directory. If you've assigned s: to VD0:, as you did with FONTS:, and you have acc!.def in the s directory on your Whap disk, Access will never find it. Put it in your assigned s: directory. Best, -jcs-

Jim Got Whap! running. All I can say is WOW!!!!! and the check is in the mail. Only comment I have is about View!. Messages that have more lines than be displayed on the screen do not start at the top of that message but jump to about the middle of that message. I when have to back the message up to see start of it using the slider. This happens when I use the next gadget on the bottom of the view! screen. GREAT!!!!!!!! program very one should get it and register it. Hayward
#300From: Jul 14, 1988 8:44 AM
Hi Hayward! The way it's supposed to work is that if the message plus its header is too large to be displayed completely in the window, the first line of the message will be the first thing visible with the header scrolled up. The header info is repeated in the 'red bar' so that info is mostly redundant. If you do indeed find that more than just the header is scrolled up, let me know. Best, -jcs-
#481From: George GlinesJul 15, 1988 10:36 PM
Well, I sort of got Whap! to run, at least it dialed CIS, but once Access!30a loaded, I couldn't communicate with CIS. Any characters I enter just appear as xxxxxx on the Access! screen? George
#485From: KEITH YOUNGJul 15, 1988 10:44 PM
George, It sounds like you got swapped to a higher (or lower) baud rate when Acc! booted. Access! comes up set to the baud rate you have specified in "Preferences"; run the Preferences program and set your baud rate there to what you normally use (for what you want Acc! to boot up running at). That oughta' fix it. – Keith
#506From: Jul 16, 1988 12:59 AM
Keith, He could always manually change Access!'s baud rate when it comes up. Not the way I'd do it, thought. I'd change my preferences 😉 . Best, -jcs-
#502From: Jul 16, 1988 12:58 AM
George, Access gets its default baud from preferences. Make sure you have it set for the baud rate you want to use. Best, -jcs-
#563From: George GlinesJul 16, 1988 12:56 PM
So, if I want to call at different baud rates, I have to run preferences first (using Access!)?
#572From: KEITH YOUNGJul 16, 1988 2:13 PM
George, Currently, yes. The other (easier) way is to just change the baud rate in the Acc! menu manually once it's booted. – Keith
#600From: Jul 16, 1988 4:58 PM
George, I believe that's the way Access works. Your default baud rate comes from Preferences. If you want to change the baud rate for that session, pull down the menu and select your currently wanted baud rate. Best, -jcs-

#1043From: Christopher TolmieJul 18, 1988 3:42 PM
Jim, I'd like to say thanks for Whap! now even though I'm still trying it out and getting it to work. I'm also letting you know that 'the check is indeed in the mail' and just to get rid of the annoying register now screen I think it'll be worth it [grin]. BTW I had a slight problem when almost finished reading the last threads of AmigaVendor , nothing was coming in from the modem and I tried clicking in the window and sending a CR or ^C to try and get things going again. It didn't help and I ended up aborting. Now maybe it was the node or CIS instead of the program. What I'm asking is will the program be able to handle line problems and say adjust the Marked messages for the next sesssion so you won't have to recapture the entire message thread but rather append to the file already captured? I like the way the program did the overhead, setting all the OPTs for me the first time I tried Whap!, and that Easyplex it sent you was pretty sneaky too! What other little auto-goodies did you put in it to do for you …hmmmm B) I get worried when I see something doing everything for me without me saying it's OK, just keep me informed of your Hijinx. But all in all I couldn't help but grin as I discovered each feature of Whap! and View!, Whap! has been, so far (probably until my visa bill arrives) everything I'd been wanting in a C$S navigator. I never could get the handle on off-line composition of messages and now I don't have to figure it out you fixed it for me! Thanks again, -Chris-
#1063From: Jul 18, 1988 4:55 PM
Chris, I don't know what happened although it does sounds as if your node went away. If it was Whap! going to sleep your manually entered carriage return would have gotten a response form CompuServe and Whap! would have taken off again. Also, every day, sometime between 5 am EDT and again around 5 pm EDT CompuServe takes the forums down for maintenance. Considering the time stamp on your message that may have been what happened. You can set the append option in your forum parameters screen. If you use this option on a regular basis, be sure you've got enough disk space. The file will grow forever. An email is sent. Not meant to be sneaky. It is a way for me to know that you have properly set up your CompuServe parameters. If you tell me you are having problems doing something yet I haven't gotten the email, I know you're not configured correctly and that gives me a starting point to help you out with any problems. Best, -jcs-

Hello, Jim and Whap!ers. PC/MS-DOS Tappers bring you salutations and congratulations on getting Whap! (please don't tell me it's full name is Whap!CIS) out the door. Looks like you're getting a great reception and the kind of user loyalty and enthusiasm we're lucky enough to have with TAPCIS. Good luck on the program and on finding the hours in the day. If I can help, c'mon over to the TAPCIS Forum and holler. Howard Benner, author of TAPCIS
