#3000 Questions

I've just received my new 3000, and I have a couple questions …
1) How do you boot up under 1.3 … I pressed both mouse buttons, and while
it DID bring up a menu, my only choices were to boot from DF0:, the 2.0
partition, and DF2:. I replaced the hard drive, and followed all the
Install instructions … and saw all the 1.3 stuff get written to the
drive, just can't seem to figure out how to get to it!
2) Am I correct that you have to have a Multi-Sync monitor, not just a VGA
monitor, to take advantage of the 3000's de-interlacing capabilities? I
was using a FlickerFixer and a VGA monitor with my 2000 … and was unable
to get the VGA to work with the 3000. I'm back to the 1084s right now …
I'd appreciate any answers … i'm very pleased with the machine so far!

I picked up my new A3000 12 days ago…welcome to the club! 8^) That's
curious about not being able to boot 1.3 from the HD. I'm sure I remember
the cold boot menu giving me the option to boot either 2.x or 1.3, both
from either the HD or a floppy. Maybe your HD wasn't properly set up.
(I'm using 2.03 exclusively anyway…I tossed everything that didn't work
under it, which didn't amount to anything important anyway.)
A VGA monitor should work correctly with the 3000's deinterlaced video
output. Make sure the toggle switch next to the 31.5 KHz video port is set
to "Enable." It's possible that the deinterlacer is way out of alignment,
I guess. Or just isn't working. What brand and model VGA monitor do you
have?
I'm also very pleased with my new Amiga. 2.0 is terrific. I can't wait
til we see software written specifically for it (commercial software, I
mean).

I figured out the answer to my "problem" right after I posted my
message. I hard ever do a cold boot … and that's when you need to press
both buttons down. I has trying it from a warm boot..
As for the monitor, it was a Packard Bell VGA monitor … when plugged
in, the monitor picture would not stop rolling … like I needed to adjust
the horizontal hold. I think i'll have to break down and get a 1950, as
this 1084s has a problem with the pix fading.
I was trying to get this new system started on a budget … and was
going to hold off getting additional RAM. This was a mistake! Not even
JR-COMM will run on a stock 3000 25/50 … not enough fast ram. I
purchased additional RAM today, and just finished putting the machine back
together. The CHIP RAM is conveniently located, but the FAST RAM access is
a real pain! Ah well … still enjoying the new surroundings …

Rob… I agree with you about the location of, or at least access to, the
fast ram on the 3000. I ordered 4 meg of zips teh day I brought home the
system, and was really kind of suprprised to learn, two days later, that I
had to remove the power supply and drive platform just to pop in some
chips… installing adspeed in my 2000 was easier. I also had to stare at
the ram sockets for quite awhile trying to figure out how the 4 banks were
laid out (I'm not used to stuff like that).
However, all things considered, it was well worth the effort (and $264) to
go from 1 meg chip/1 meg fast to 2 meg chip/4 meg fast!

Glad you got the cold boot thing sorted out. I powered down and tried
it (I also hardly ever turn my computer(s) off) after I left my message.
You had me wondering there for a minute…. 8^)
I had 4 megs of fast RAM (Static Column variety) installed when I bought
the 3000. I was used to 10 megs on my 2000, so 6 is a bit of a come-down.
But I'm managing. <g>

1) To boot under 1.3 I just slip the 1.3 system disk in DF0: and reboot.
2) The Amiga's video output has a horizontal sync frequency of 15.75 or
31.5 KHz, depending if you're in de-interlaced mode (Display Enhancer) or
not. Many multisync monitors cannot scan at the lower frequency, which
means you're screwed if you're using display devices like the HAM-E, which
doesn't work at 31.5, or if you simply want to see how much flicker is
present in that latest Deluxe Paint masterpiece you want to dump to video.
Believe me, my 1950 monitor gets switched between 15.75 and 31.5 every day.

Only thing I can think of is that for some reason the 1.3 partition
didn't get marked as bootable. My HD has three(3) partitions on it:
WB_2.x — Bootable? Yes
WB_1.3 — Bootable? Yes
Working — Bootable? No
I used the HDToolbox to look at the drive. Maybe if you make your 1.3
partition bootable, it will show up on the 'double mouse button down'
screen.
