Hi! I'm a developer (software type) and I'm contemplating getting a 210 Quantum Pro hard drive. I have an A3000 which is to be its host. I went to the local store but they have been of ZERO help. What I need to know, is can it be installed internally? Although the drive literature I have says its SCSI do I need a separate controller, or can it connect directly in? I've given up on my local store… they couldn't even give me a price!!! <ARRGHHHH> In advance, thanks for any help. If it were a software problem I'ld have had it solved by now. s/ Geoff

Geoffrey, I just a Q210s in my 2000…here are some tips for you (I also have a 3000 at work, so I know a bit about them…): 1. The Quantum 210 will work fine with the controller already in the machine. 2. You can use the 210 internally…it can probably be wedged into a floppy bay…hopefully someone here can confirm/disconfirm this. I assume that you want to keep the drive that is already in there. 3. You will need a three (or more) headed SCSI cable for the install. 4. You should be able to get this drive for less than $600 mail order. 5. The drive is fast and reliable. You'll be very happy with it. Jonathan – via Whap!

Geoffrey; The A3000's have been shipped with a couple of different ribbon cables connecting the existing internal drive. I is just a single cable between the motherboard and the drive. The more current one is a cable to the internal drive with a male header on the end which allows the addition of another drive by only adding a female to female 50 pin jumper (of course you still have to remove the terminator packs from the internal drive. -bill

I've got a wonderful room-warming Quantum 210MB drive in my 3000 along with a 50MB Quantum. I've had no problems with either drive. The 210MB drive has been going strong for over to years now. As long as it's the SCSI 210, you're all right. Also, Quantum has replaced the 210MB drive with a 240MB drive in a low profile format (less power consuming, slightly faster, smaller height wise) so it may be a wiser choice if you can find one. Works very well in a 3000. Because of it's size, a friend has stacked a 50 and a 240 in the same spot next to the power supply and has two internal floppy drives in his 3000. No problem with heat as both of those drives combined can't match the heat produced by my 210! 🙂 Hot enough to cook eggs on! 🙂 Dan McCoy – via Whap! and saving money doing it too!

Thanks for the info. Yes a 1/2 height was what I was thinking of. I'll specifically keep a look out for the 240 Mb version! :+)
