Nautilus – Can't run

I'm having a fatal problem with Nautilus on my new Zeos 486DX2-66 system. The system uses a Viper VLB video card, and no matter what I do, I get GPFs when running Nautilus – and the error messages points to Toolbook as the cause. I run at 1024{x768 and I do not want or relish the thought of running at a lower resolution. Nautilus/Tookbook are also the *only* programs out of the dozens I use (including some goodies like CorelDraw 4.0) that cause this problem. Any clues guys? Thanx Peter Szymonik

Hi Peter. The problem you are experiencing is caused by a conflict between ToolBook, Windows, and the video card drivers. If an application performs correctly with one driver but doesn't with another, it is highly likely that the problem is with the driver. Have you updated the drivers recently? We have learned that ToolBook makes more demands on a display driver than virtually any other Windows program. You should contact your video card manufacturer for updated drivers. Meanwhile, try using the generic VGA driver that comes with Windows and/or lowering the number of colors of your video card driver to 256. Please let me know how this works for you. Hi Karin, I have the very latest Viper drivers and board ROM. I don't want to drop resolution for a number of reasons, the main one being that I'm running PCTOOLS for Windows and resetting my elaborate desktop takes forever after a resolution change. Also note that while Toolbook may make serious demands of video drivers, I can't imagine that it needs more than CorelDraw 4.0, which runs fine on my system. Peter

Peter, please ignore the second reply regarding lowering your resolution and number of colors. I didn't see your answer to my reply until just now. I will keep working on a solution to your problem. Thanks for your continued support and patience. Karin Gall Nautilus Technical Support

Well, surprise: there are lots of folks having problems with "the latest drivers" from Diamond. They apparently haven't done a very good job with the Viper's drivers, I'm sorry to say. I monitor this forum daily (although I am not a Nautilus employee), and I see a message from someone with a Viper problem about once a week. I hardly ever see such notices about other cards. I am sorry to be the bearer of such bad news, but you should at least know. <g> It is true, by the way, that Toolbook does stress the Windows video standard more than Corel Draw. I use both products, and have had occassion to test a wide variety of hardware for my books. I would give Corel a "stress factor" of about 8.5, and Toolbook a factor of about 9.5. <g> They are both very good for trying to break video drivers, but Toolbook breaks more than Corel does. Ron

Surprise, the Viper drivers work fine. 🙂 I found the answer to my problem – its as simple as turning off the Viper's Turbo Palette. I'm now happily running Nautilus at 1024x768x256 using the Viper's incredible Windows speed. Peter

I solved my problem with the Viper and Toolbook 🙂 The answer was as simple as turning off the Viper's Turbo Palatte setting. I'm now happily running Nautilus/Toolbook at 1024x768x256 using the Viper's blistering speed 🙂 Thanx Peter Szymonik p.s. Next question – where do I find my Subscriber Info Nr.? I keep getting an error message from Link asking me for it.

Peter, GPFs indicate an incompatibility between your video card driver and ToolBook. Are you running in a high number of colors? If so, try lowering them to 256 or lowering the resolution to 640×480 or 800×600. Also, have you updated your video card drivers lately? If not, you might want to check with the video card manufacturer to see if they have issued new ones lately. Let me know if these suggestions help. Thanks for sending your message on CompuServe.
