Ben, Can I send in my free upgrade ticket now, to get R/T? Or should I wait until the actual release? Are the new manuels done? …Steve ====>>> Motorola 68030 Inside <<<====

You can sent it in – the next upgrade is R/t, and we're holding for it now. –Ben …via AutoPilot

Will the $25 upgrade price from IM to IM r/t include hardcopy manuals? By all predictions, r/t should be ready just about now. Is it? Jeff Kassel c/o Citra

Citra, Ben has mentioned that from now on there will be No Hardcopy Manuals for Imagemaster. I'm not real happy with this idea but with the support I get here I REALLY can't complain

Plus… wait'll you see the docs before you make any final decisions… they're really pretty good. Plus, if they have shortcomings, they can be _fixed_, where a hardcopy manual is what it is until the stock runs out. Not to mention (he cleverly mentioned) that this is a considerable win on environmental issues, provides you with a few spare usable floppies, costs less to ship, produce and package, and is updatable with no more delay than it takes to type in changes at the tech support desks. Printed manuals… phooey. :^) –Ben …via AutoPilot

Unless these docs are available from within IM I don't see how it could be as convenient as a Good printed manual. Atleast the reference sections. I guess you could print from within the docs but I don't even have a printer :^( ….John

The docs ARE available from within IM. COmpletely context-sensitive, multitasking, contain images and etc. –Ben …via AutoPilot

Ben, At first I thought than no manual wasn't such a good idea; but after trying your ApAssist/IMR/t demo, I can see how most of the paper can go away. I always hated using manuals anyway, even the good ones. Should be a real time saver, but hard to take to the bathroom to study!!! Can we assume there will still be a command summary sheet, a warranty, and maybe your TS phone # in print? Just in case the system won't boot 8{). … Nate, Emerald Video.

>>Should be a real time saver, but hard to take to the bathroom to study!!!<< LOL…. aha! Another good reason why we need an Amiga Laptop. 🙂

Yep – there will be minimum printed information suppllied so the user can have recovery path assuming total failure of installation for some reason. Actually, the ApAssist demo here doesn't reflect a significant portion of the features of the release-level ApAssist product; we're just about to release it (I think the disks go into duplication Monday, unless the queue is deeper than I think) – you should see ApAssist documents appearing before too long with VERY cool documents. –Ben …via AutoPilot

This IS starting to sound very good, I did like the demo docs you u/l. I Don't really like printed docs, for more than one reason. But It's kinda funny paying Big $$$ and only getting a couple cheap disks in exchange. It is the Magic code thats on these disks that counts though :^) You guys keep up the good work, I want my ALL new IM R/t. ….John

I'll be printing out the next Manual without fail. Quick Comment here Ben. PLEASE attempt to add an option for the printing routine that allows you to do MANUAL FEEDS so I can print on both sides of the pages thereby saving paper and allowing me to POSSIBLY bind the Bloody thing into a Book myself.

Just about ready, yes it is. :^) There will *never* be hardcopy manuals. We've gone to a hypertext documentation system, with online, context-sensitive assistance at the press of a key. These manuals, when available, will come with R/t and will be available to any R/t owner who might have got in early enough to have the s/w before the docs were completed. They wouldn't be a lot of good to a "regular" Imagemaster owner who hasn't upgraded, because R/t is really quite different anyway. So yes, docs are included in the price, and no, they're not hardcopy. –Ben …via AutoPilot

These docs won't be available with the initial release of IM r/t ? Hopefully we won't have to wait as long for this as the last Promised printed manual. That never happened….. ….John

Hypertext format sounds like the right approach, bravo. Any "straight" text method, for such an extensive document, would be a quagmire to negotiate electronically, and users would inevitably make a hardcopy version. That would kill the "green PC" concept. I'm not clear on one thing, is the hypertext documentation available now, with the r/t release? Jeff Kassel… c/o Citra

We're cooking it – it is designed for R/t, but it looks like R/t will be done first. We won't hold up the release for the docs, we'll just supply them free as soon as they are ready. Some of the docs will be there with R/t, they just won't be complete. –Ben …via AutoPilot

Ben, Let me express my opinion here, I really would prefer a hard copy manual to online type of docs. I still have just a cheap 9 pin printer and after 100 pages or so the ink runs thin. Fan fold paper is a hassle to leaf thru to look for a particilar item or to sit down and read in the easy chair too. Loose leaf is even a bigger hassle unless it is bound in some type of folder (another hassle setting up). I am hoping here for a consensus of users that may share my opinion will chime in here and change your (BBS) minds. Maybe a printed manual for the intitial release and upgrade info in the doc file. Reprint the manual every 2 or 3 full revisions. JMHO …Steve ====>>> Motorola 68030 Inside <<<====

I agree with Setzer, Printed manuals are the way to go. or Printed and Hypertext. but at least Printed. Steve Thompson —> AutoPilot

Well, I don't want a printed manual, they just get lost or munged up somehow, and I like Hypertext. Bob Comer — Cruising the nets on AutoPilot from Cheyenne, Wyoming

I agree. to much clutter and not enough room on my desk, give me a good hypertet manual, I have plenty of hard disk space.

You are welcome to your opinion, but in this case the die is well and truly cast. A printed document can't provide even a fraction of the flexibility of a hyper doc – just as a for instance, the fluid links between a word and a glossary definition isn't there, and you're reduced to looking it up manually, whihc takes many times longer. That's just the tip of he iceberg. Although ApAssist hasa some very nice printing facilities, I expect that few people will use that capability, even though you think you want it now. My personal feeling is that people are resisting Hyper docs because they either do not understand what it is they are going to be exposed to because they not seen hypertext at work, or because they've seen poor hypertext – either badly produced or generated on a crippled system like "AmigaGuide". We will see what you think after you've seen it – in the meantime, you are welcome to be nervous – I think it'll make the real thing all the more sweet for you. –Ben …via AutoPilot

OK, I think I can settle for a HyperText manual if it has a few features I would like to see. Lets say I'm in IM r/t and in the special effects section of the process panel. I have no idea what Asterize means, or what it will do for my images. But I can click on it with my right mouse button, and presto…..a help screen pop's up giving me all the information I need about Asterize, plus a couple of sample pics showing the effect of the Asterize operator. Does ApAssist work in the same way? I don't want to go back and forth between what I'm doing in IM, and bringing up help I need from ApAssist. It should almost be a part of IM itself. If it works this way then great, I want it today <g>. // \X/ John – (Who enjoys harrasing the vendors)

Steve, my Imagemaster manual has been gathering dust ever since I read it cover to cover. I always check the addendum for information, and with new, hypertext, context-sensitive, online help, a printed manual would be a waste of resources and money. I think Ben's right on the money with this ApAssist thingie. Blaq!
