Thanks for the reply, I read the article in 3d artist. I'm lookin for maybe someone whose used it, maybe one of those shadowy beta-test people. I don't hold much with magazine articles, I want to talk to an artist whose used it. Tim

Tim, I just purchased the Amiga version of the product. For more info you can type GO AMIGAARTS and leave a message in the 3d rendering area. Real 3d has been available on the amiga for 3 or 4 years. There are about 10 people in the forum that use or are learning to use, they can answer most of your questions. It is a very complex program, particle animation, liquids, gravity, collision detection…. Someone mentioned that it renders much slower than 3d studio release 2, tis true…. It probably renders slower than any renderer I have ever seen, but then it is true ray tracing and B-Spline objects tend to bog the engine down very VERY much. To my knowledge this will be Realsofts' first pc venture here in the U.S., so I would get plenty of info from real users before I jumped from 3d studio…. I just wish I could afford 3d Studio!!! 🙂

James, PMJI, >> I just wish I could afford 3d Studio!!! << The question you should be asking is.."Could I afford _not_ to invest in 3D Studio". I had a very flush client in here yesterday…they could easily afford the $50K software. Their Videographer who started with PC animation in the pre-Amiga days commented that the Power and functionality of 3D Studio is unparralled in the industry. When I asked him to explain he mentioned the already existing third party support pointing to Digimations 5 tape "In The Studio" tutorial series as well as Michele Bousquet and Glenn Melenhorst's 3 book set on 3D Studio Tips & Tricks. Also the Exabyte/Abekas Drivers by ASDG as well as companies that formerly only supported Amiga that are now porting software as well as hardware to work with 3D Studio on this platform. (FFV,DPS, Etc.) All the Mesh people, Rachel Rosenthal's SuitPeople, Tom Knight, Wizard, Schrieber, Yost Groups IPAS routines, Real World, Modern Medium, –I knew I shouldn't have started a list….welll you get the point! He pointed out that Amiga is underfunded, their developers , while doing a fantastic job in the example of the Video Toaster folks….are not really as solidly commited to their platform as the 3D Studio people..While that's just his opionion he does have a point about where 3D Studio has been and is going. Release 3 will be an unprecidented success at opening even more markets as well as widening the third party software and hardware support. You just don't see this kind of thing happening to the "other" products in this catagory. Or even "Above" this catagory. I would seriously reconsider purchasing 3D Studio. I'm not just saying this because I'm a dealer…I've been in the electronics industry since 1967 and I know when a solid product comes knocking you better answer or wish you had latter after much expense in the wrong direction. Sometimes it's better to morgage the farm so you can DO serious business instead of buying in too cheap! I've seen it happen hundreds of times to companies that thought they were saving money. I just smile and remember..they'll be back. For what it's worth. James M. Murphy James Murphy consulting Green Bay, Wisconsin U.S.A.

Jim – FYI, the POV shareware ray-tracer has a translation utility that will convert 3DS files into POV ray-tracable files for those jobs that *really* call for ray tracing. One could do all the work in 3DS, as usual, export to POV those parts that need ray tracing, render all and Video Post the parts together. The lack of ray tracing in 3DS is not really even a concern. Just another pebble on your pile of reasons why 3DS is the way to go. FWIW DT

David, could you tell me more about this conversion process "POV" What will it do for my animations; improvement? Give me a little detail of how this process works in 3DS. What will it do to rendering time? Where can I find it to experiment so I can then see what you'll be talking about. Please excuse my ignorance in this area but I've only ever worked with 3DS. I'm looking forward to one of your long winded discriptions (seriously :|)

PMJI Having recently competed 3DS rendering with a 486-66 and targa to a 3/4 Umatic against an Amiga 2000 with excellerator card, Lightwave and frame accurate output to a SVHS7750 I can honestly say that 3DS beat the amiga so bad that the owners are now hireing me to do their animation. We used the same project and created the wireframes in each respective software. The rendering lasted 70 seconds on 3DS per frame as opposed to 21 minutes on the amiga. Granted, the reflections looked better than 3DS but overall quality, antialiasing, resolution, color purity was far superior from the targa+. The toaster is a fine video switcher for the money, but I wouldn't consider the animation capability fiscally feasable for any serious profit making work. One thing I did like about the Lightwave product is the wireframe animates during the keyframing process. 3DS uses box objects, or you have to do a low res. rendering that I very seldom use because it IMHO is a waste of time. I wonder if Gary is adding something like this for release 3?
