#A1291 Problem

I have the following;
A1200 + GVP A1230 (40Mhz Version with 1Mb GVP RAM installed, no FPU), GVP
A1291 SCSI adaptor, Maxtor 7040s 40 Mb SCSI Drive.
Problem;
when trying prep the HD, I get an unnexpected status error (posted before)
which is $49/$45.
You say that this is a cabling/termination error however I have tried the
following;
Three SCSI cables of different lengths and make
Three Terminators (two passive and one active) of different makes
Two drives (both the same model Maxtor)
Two A1291 SCSI Adaptors (Returned original to Silica – UK Distributor)
Two versions of gvpscsi.device and FastPrep
Internal and external termination
A Tandberg Tape drive (TDC 3600)
NONE of the above works correctly with ANY setting I use. I have
experimented almost every day since APRIL (when I bought it) to no avail.
The only thing I can assume from my experiences is that the A1291 is both
poorly designed and incompatible with most standard SCSI devices which
operate on both PC's and Mac's (I've tried both Maxtors at work and
they're fine).
Unless you can suggest any course of action I could take to remedy my
situation, I will be returning the A1291 to my dealer and demanding a
refund. I will no longer buy GVP products (currently I have over $700
worth).
I don't normally complain or write this sort of letter however on this
occasion I feel strongly enough to put my feelings down in print.
I would appreciate your passing this letter to the management of GVP.

Kevin,
You mention "two versions of gvpscsi.device". If you are talking about
software versions, then you need to place a jumper on J6 of the A1230 to allow
the software version to work properly. Otherwise, it will always take the
driver from the ROM on the A1230.
Also, you mention that you are trying to add a Maxtor drive. There is a spin
up jumper that comes shorted on Maxtor drives, but are always removed when
using the drive on a GVP controller. THis could account for the status
message. Without a specific model number, I cannot tell you where that jumper
is.
Your note also fails to mention if the A1230/1291 setup was tried on another
A1200 machine or if a larger power supply was used on the A1200 (the stock
supply is the weakest of all Amiga models). I recommend looking into these
issues, if possible. I have used the A1230/1291 almost exclusively with Maxtor
drives, so I am confident that a compatibility issue does not exist, unless the
drives were modified for some unknown reason.

Okay, I'm getting somewhere now.
Point 1. Nobody told me that you needed to short jumper 6 on the A1230 to
utilise software versions of gvpscsi.device. Can this be put into a
readme file or the manual for future reference? I'll try at and let you
know.
Point 2. Maxtor call this a "Power Up Option" and it's jumper J602 pins
1-2 on the Maxtor 7040s I've got. Unfortunately I've tried it shorted and
removed to no avail.
Point 3. No, neither the A1230 or A1291 have been tried on another A1200
(the dealer operates a swap policy not test policy) If I can't get it to
work after this session of efforts, I'll "discuss" this policy with them!

Okay, I've now tried all that you suggest (jumper 6 on A1230 to use s/w
version of gvpscsi.device and jumper on/off Maxtor for the "spin up
option" – they call it the Power Up Option) and I still get the messages
🙁
Any more suggestions?
