#Flic playback in Keyfrmr
16 messages in this thread
Why don't my 640×480 flics playback in the keyframer? I made them in 3DS. I
have the palette set to low, and have installed all the Vibrant drivers for my
Viper.
I have Playflc by VRLI, and it takes them just fine. So does AAPLAY for
Windows. It's strange..

When you install the Vibrant drivers, you've got to make sure that you're using
the Vibrant Viper drivers for FLIC playing (near the bottom of the Vibrant
config screen) and THEN you've got to install the various resolutions you want
to use them at. Note that there is a macro button for installing all the
available 256-color drivers for a given card right there. Use it and you
should be fine.

I did, and it doesn't. All are installed. (I reinstalled them all before I
asked)
Still no-go. It does some funky palette stuff. It plays it, but the palette
is off (way off), and it's reallly slow. Even in smallish .flc files. (fli's
are fine) I'm using 640×480 low palette 3DS flic files. ??
Thanks for the quick response though..
Actually, I was going to recommend something to you. (As I held down the enter
key for several minutes) I shift-3d scaled the stars thing uploaded (cool),
but had to manually hold down the enter key to accept the renamed (created)
little particles. A "yes to all" type button would be cool. Otherwise I have
to make it an individual object, or wait.. FWIW.
Also, is there any "wind" type IPAS out there (coming) that would take all
these little particles (and my planet, ect) and swirl them around? Is this
something coming in the Dynamics IPAS coming from Brent Malnac, etc? Just
wondering. I see all these cool little particles and want to spin them
around.. 🙂 I guess I'll have to get your vapor.. that should do it. Can
Vapor affect other objects as well?
BTW- I've been working with 3DS R2 , and R3's much better.. I finally see the
changes.. (kinda backwards though.<g>) Great job. (good press too.)

PS. another idea… Sound. I'd love to see an IPAS that takes wav files and
attaches them to dummy's, and then sound raytraces them to the camera. That'd
be really cool, and add some good effects. Mabe even Dolby-Pro Logic
encoding.. That'd be sweet.
Enough for now. Thanks again.

Weird. My Viper PCI card plays flics in all sorts of resolutions fine. Ah,
hardware. The living nightmare.
Re making things swirl around. BlackBox has Vortex (also sold by the Schreiber
folks) which'll take arbitrary particles and make a vortex out of them.
Positron is still working on their Dynamics package with wind, gravity,
collision, etc — they'll be showing it at Siggraph in a beta form.
Have fun,
– G
Bummer. No help then. Oh well. I usually don't use it anyways. Mabe it'll
fix itself or something.?? Who knows?
>Vortex
Sounds interesting.
I can't wait to see Positron's Dynamics.. <drool>
Brent gave me a promo sheet of it for Lightwave (like the ad's). I haven't
stopped drooling since. <g>

PMJI, but I have a Viper (VLB) too…. No problem with flic sizes. Could the
"funky pallette stuff" possibly be the fact you're using LOW ? If lighting /
light angle, or any number of other things changed substantially from the first
frame, it could easily create some "funky" stuff on playback.
<< Also, is there any "wind" type IPAS out there (coming) that would take all

Actually, Flock 3D, also from Blackbox might be even better as a make-do wind
emulator, as the effects are random – unless you want the order obtainable by
Vortex.

Jump in anytime.
It's probably the pallette. It really zooms around. I guess I'll have to look
up the pallete types. I haven't really understood them, just left them at low.
What do you usually use for 640×480 flics?
Thanks about the black box info.

John,
<< What do you usually use for 640×480 flics? >>
I tend to use medium for almost everything. Check out the index under Palette
and you'll find a few pages that really go into the details. It's in the
Keyframer-Render-Setup-Configure section of the manual.

Thanks Jonas.

If I'm not mistaken, LOW uses the pallete from the first frame, MED re-calcs
the pallete each frame then creates optimized pallette from all frames, HIGH
temporarily writes 24-bit frame files, then creates 8-bit optimized pallete
from that considering all frames, CUSTOM lets you specify a flic, .col file,
etc. to use. Therefore, I usually use MED, as the results are much faster &
usually not distinguishable from HIGH.
I never create flics that large, but the spatial res. doesn't really matter
unless one argues to use HIGH, as you could "see" more imperfections due to the
higher spatial res….I'd still use MED.
BILL
Very right on description/interpretation of the palette modes. Succinct, too!
– G
<< Succinct, too! >>
I cut a couple of my fingers, that's all <g>.
BILL
Thanks for the good desc. From your, and Jonas' suggestions, I'll use medium.
The only reason I use 640×480 is to get a good preview overnight that I can't
get with 320×200, and I don't have any video out here. I've got to backup to
tape.
Happy fourth.
JNJ
You're welcome, have a nice holiday.
BILL
hi john, i also generally use medium palette but as i near final rendering
stage i switch to custom palette. see the 3ds ref man pg 8-117, VGA Palette
Control for Flics, for a descr. of how this is done.
bill.
Thanks Bill.
